In 1652, the Dutch East India Company was founded in what would later be Cape Town
Dutch East India company was founded in 1652 as a refreshment area to restock supplies on ships and rest ill and weary sailors. The area was popular due to the easy access to fresh water. Most of the ships traveling to Asia for trade would stop at Dutch East India Company. -
In 1795, Britain takes Cape from Dutch
Due to happenings in Europe, Britain took Cape Town from the Dutch. This separated them from the Afrikaners and Boers even more. Seven years later, Cape Town was under Dutch control once again, but the alliance between holland and Napoleon made it so that Cape Town was under British control again in 1806. -

In 1948, Apartheid begins
Apartheid was a time of racial segregation in South Africa. Apartheid was enacted for britain's complete control over all of their colonies in South Africa. Immediate racism was in play, as black people in South Africa couldn't own their own property or choose where to live, as there were inaccurate tribal heritage homelands. Only certain jobs were available for black South Africans, and the police were constantly breathing down the necks of black South Africans, ready to kill. -
On June 11 of 1964 Nelson Mandela was sentenced to life in prison for sabotage along with seven other colleagues
On June 11 of 1964, Nelson Mandela was arrested the fourth and last time for sabotage, or protesting racism. Anyone who protested Apartheid was arrested or killed, as the British authorities didn't want people rebelling. After 27 years in jail, he was released. After jail, he became President of South Africa. -
In 1991, Apartheid ends

In April 26, 1994, after the first fair elections in South African history ever, Nelson Mandela is elected president.
After 27 years in prison for protesting apartheid and racism in South Africa, Nelson Mandela was elected president of South Africa. This was the first election where black South Africans could vote. He served only one 5 year term, but remained an inspiration to many. After his presidency, he opened many humanitarian non profit organizations. -
