Population Registration Act
South African citizens are classified into 3 groups; whites, colored (Asian) or Native (Black). Interracial marriages are outlawed. Children might come from a mixed set of parents, but they are separated into whichever categorie they resemble the most. Families were broken apart, and many lost jobs. -
Bantu Authorities Act Passed
Lands are reserved for black Africans and forced to become independent contries. Blacks lose South African citizenship and can only enter the country with passports or to serve white families/people. The designated homelands are too small to support the population, and black South Africans begin to retaliate through the use of peaceful resistance. -
Preservation of Seperate Amenities Act
"Seperate but not neccesarily equal" laws are enforced. Public places including parks, beaches, etc are separated by category of race. -
Sharpeville Massacre
A group of black Africans refuse to carry their identification booklets. Government declares a state of emergency, 69 are killed, 187 wounded. -
Nelson Mandela is jailed
President of top political organization for black African's, the African National Congress. (ANC) One of the leaders who promoted people not to carry their passes in Sharpeville. -
South African Student Organization (SASO) is formed
Unifies students through the Black Conciousness Movement. Lead by Steven Biko. -
Soweto Uprising
High School students protest in response to being taught Afrikaans ( Language of whites that descended from the Dutch). It is estimated that over 20,000 students participated in the protest. Police reacted with gunfire, killing 575 people, and thousands were injured or arrested. -
Death of Steven Biko
The leader of SASO is beaten to death by 3 police officers after his incarceration at Pretoria prison. Over 10,000 people attended his funeral. -
