Apartheid became a law
Apartheid became a law after the National Party won the election in 1948. They declared certain areas to where the white and black can go. -
Banned - Both Colored Marriages
In 1950, the government banned marriages for that blacks cannot marry whites and whites cannot marry blacks. -
Breaking Laws
People began to break laws such as only black people have a curfew and that black people can not sit on an "Only White People's Bench". -
Education
The government law passes a new law that was about the education. That seperates whites and blacks. The whites got more education than the blacks. -
Police broke them apart
One day, 3,000 South Africans gathered together in a dusty square in Kliptown. They were having a meeting. The next day police broke up the meeting. Nelson Mandala was in that meeting. But he escaped since he was disguised as a milkman. -
Accused
The government accused around 156 leaders, including Nelson Mandela. -
Most Violent
One of the most violent events happened in 1960. Apartheid took place in Sharpeville, people killed around 69 black africans and wounding much more. -
Police
Black South Africans invaded the roads infront of a police station in Cape Town. Police arrested more than 100 leaders of the groups. -
Killed
The police killed more than 67 people and wounded over 186, including children, most of the injured got shot in their back as they were trying to flee. -
Martin Luther King
Martin believed that South Africa had the world's worst racism. -
Police opened fired
In 1976, thousands of black children in Soweto, the police opened fire with tear gas and bullets. -
Even more killed
Over 4,000 people were killed. Some of them died from eating rat poisoning. -
Mandela
When Nelson Mandela was released from prison on Febuary, he worked with President F.W. de Klerks government to draw up a new constitution for South Africa. -
President de Klerk
President de Klerk helped free Nelson Mandela from prison after 27 years of being there. He was freed in 1990. -
Voting for All
There was a two day peaceful election with millions of black South Africans voting in a national election for the first time. -
Allowing everyone to Vote
Both whites and blacks were allowed to vote in 1994. Nelson Mandela was elected for the first black president in South Africa. -
Mandela
Nelson was sworn in as South Africa's president. -
Miners Shot Dead
34 miners were shot dead in South Africa by police because they were colored. -
Ended
Apartheid ended in 1994. -
Because Blacks weren't treated like Whites
There were around 18,000 murders every single year. -
