Launch of Apartheid
The South African government officially establishes the system of the apartheid. -
The election of 1948
An election running between The Reunited National Party and United Party. The National Party lead Daniel Francois Malan won the election. -
The Prohibition of Mixed Marriages Act
This act prohibited marriages between people of different races. One of the first legislations to be passed through the National Party. -
Population Registration Act
Required every inhibitant of South Africa be classified and registered in accordance with their racial characteristics. -
Suppression of Communism Act
It banned the spread of communism and the right to speak your mind. -
Bantu Authorities Act
It made the deportation of African-Americans legal. -
Black legal firm
Nelson Mandela and Oliver Tambo open the first black legal firm in South Africa. -
The African National Congress Starts the Defiance Campaign
Peaceful resistance to apartheid by breaking laws they think are wrong. -
Abolition of Passes and Coordination of Documents
Repealed early laws that required black male workers of carrying passes. These passes included a photograph, origin,tax payments, employment record and encounters with the police. -
Reservation of Seperate Amenities Act
This act was legalizing racial segregation of public premises, vehicles and services. Only public roads and streets were allowed to be used by all. -
Treason
Mandela and 155 other political activists were charged with treason. They were acquitted in 1956. -
Sharpsville Massacre
Black protestors stormed a police station. 69 of the protestors were killed. -

Nelson Mandela was sentenced to life in prison for treason, but after 27 years he was released. -
Rhodesia illegal Independence
Rhodesia breaks about from Great Britain. -
Soweto Massacre
More than 600 students are killed for prostesting. These protests were for more improved black education. -
Steve Bilko Death
Anti- apartheid activist Steve Bilko dies in police custody from severe brain damage. -
Internal Security Act
The Internal Security Act banned any oranizations, publications, public gatherings and detained people without trial. And also repealed the Suppresion of Communism Act. -
Immorality and Prohibiton of Mixed Marriages Amendment Act
This date was the end to the Prohibiton of Mixed Marriages Act but the beginning to the Immorality and Prohibiton of Mixed Marriages Amendment Act. -

Steven created an album featuring many anti-apartheid songs. Including "Silver and Gold" -
Ban ended on National Congress
President Frederik Willem de Klerk ends the ban on African National Congress. Even though he supported the segregation at one time. -
Discriminatory Legislation regarding Public Amenitites Repeal Act
This Act repealed the Reservation of Seperate Amenities Act in 1953. -
Black voting
Blacks were granted the right to vote. -
Mandela for President
Mandela became president. First black South African President. -
The Truth and Reconcilliation Commission
A law requiring the governentment to expose the actions during the apartheid. -
Truth Commission Scam
The ANC admits to South Africa's truth commission that it tortured and exectued renegade militants in its war on apartheid. -
Mandela Resignation
Nelson Mandela steps down from his post of head of the ruling African National Congress. -
Mandela's Presidental Term Ends
Mandela is no longer President. -
Black Authorities Act Repeal Act
This Act repealed the Bantu Authorites act many years after the Apartheid era.
