Some IMPORTANT Events in Special Education

  • Brown v. Board of Education

    Separation of white and colored students in the schools is no longer acceptable. To continue schooling children this way would be unequal and deprive them from equal protection from the law. This is the beginning of our society beginning to look at how to serve students equally.

    Mary Kay established the Pink Cadillac as a career car. This iconic vehicle is a symbol of success for women.
  • Pennsylvania Association for Retarded Children v. Commonwealth of Pennsylvania

    Ruled for students with disabilities to be placed in publicly funded school settings that met their individual educational needs.
  • Public Law 94-142: The Education for All Handicapped Children Act of 1975

    All students that are handicapped have the right to an education and services to support them. It became the States' responsibility to monitor this .
  • Public Law 99-457

    An amendment to the All Handicapped Children Act. Required individual states to provide services to families of children born with disabilities from the time they are born instead of once they reach 3 years of age.
  • Handicapped Children’s Protection Act Signed

    Parents are now able to become more involved in their child's IEP or Individualized Education Plan. This is a plan that ensures students receive the specialized instruction that they need.
  • Mary Kay Going Green

    Mary Kay Inc became one of the first companies to create a comprehensive recycling program and banned product testing on animals.
  • Public Law 101-476

    Changes were made to Public Law 94-142, or the Education for All Handicapped Children Act. Traumatic brain injury and autism were added as new disability categories.
    Congress also said that in a student’s IEP, it must be developed to help the student transition to post-secondary life.

    This charitable foundation is established and provides funding for cancer research in cancers that effect women AND funding for domestic violence shelters across the country.
  • Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act of 2004

    Congress increased the focus on accountability and improved outcomes by emphasizing reading, early intervention, and research-based instruction by requiring that special education teachers be highly qualified.
  • Endrew F. v. Douglas County School District Re-1

    Supreme Court stated that a school must offer an IEP reasonably calculated to enable a child to make progress appropriate in light of the child’s circumstances. The Court additionally emphasized the requirement that “every child should have the chance to meet challenging objectives."
