    Pennsylvania Association for Retarded Children v. Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
    Commonwealth of PA sued by the PA Association for Retarded Citizens over a law that let the public schools have authority to deny a free education to children who had reached age of 8, yet not reached the mental age of 5. Denying free public education to children who had a hard time integrating into the school environments. The ruling called for students with disabilities to be placed in publicly funded school settings that met their unique & individual educational needs through thorough evals.
  • Education for All Handicap Children Act (Public Law 94-142)

    Education for All Handicap Children Act (Public Law 94-142)
    President Ford signed into law EHA. This act required all public schools receiving federal funds to provide equal access to education for all children with different types of mental and physical disabilities. First, was making sure that parents had a say in their own child’s education. Then put safeguards in place to protect both the student and their parents. Free, appropriate public education to children with disabilities in every state. (FAPE.)

    Americans with Disabilities Act
    This law will prohibit discrimination against people with disabilities in several areas such as employment, transportation, public accommodations, communications,& access to all government programs & services. All children and adults, no matter their disabilities have the same opportunities and rights as everyone else. This act ensures institutions are required to include equal educational opportunities, and that extracurricular activities and facilities are open and accessible to all students.

    1997 Amendments were made to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act where significant changes were made regarding the discipline of children with disabilities. Wanting students in their least restrictive environment and allowing them the same opportunity to curriculum helps establish high expectations of them. Collaborate with their peers. Equality of opportunity, full participation, independent living, and economic self-sufficiency.
  • Amendment to 2004 IDEA Act

    Amendment to 2004 IDEA Act
    IDEA 2004 est new provision that allows IEP team to be excused from attending IEP meetings under certain circumstances. It also included provisions requiring the special education & related services supplemental aides and services outlined on a student’s IEP need to be based on “peer-reviewed research” to the “extent practicable.” Calls for early intervention for students, great accountability, & improved educational outcomes. Raise instructor standards for whom teach special education classes.
