Doorway Welcome
Welcome each and every student at the door. Ask their name (and use it three times for maximum retention) before sending them into the classroom to choose whichever seat they like. -
Bathroom/Fountain Procedures
Identify immediately the bathroom/fountain procedures. These are not up for debate, but the reasoning behind them should be explained. -
Friend Wanted
Block 1:
Complete the friend wanted activity as a 'getting to know you' activity.
Friend Wanted
This activity gives you the chance to start identifying the important values of the class and what they mean when applied interpersonally. -
Draft a Collaborative Classroom Contract
Block 2:
Follow the steps outlined to create a Collaborative Classroom Contract Take a picture of the classroom contract; print it off and send it home for parents to sign as well. -
Doorway Welcome
Greet each student by name and welcome them back to class before sending them in to sit wherever they would like in the classroom. -
Exchange of Expectations
Block 1:
Before telling the students exactly what I expect our year together to look like, I ask them what they expect. Do a think-pair-share with the question: What do I expect from grade ___? At the end of the share portion, I share my expectations. I share the general (to have some fun, to work hard, to learn new things), the realist (that I will get sick so you will have a supply teacher), and then the classroom expectations (in line with the behaviour contract). -
Movement Procedures
Block 2:
Identify the procedures for moving from one room to another (for art or phys. ed.). Link them into the classroom contract. -
Role Play the Procedures
Block 3:
Place students in groups of 3 to create short scenarios wherein a student disregards one of the values (assigned) of the classroom contract and must accept the consequence. This will check for understanding of how to embody the values and ascertain the existing expectations for consequences. Have the students present and discuss each consequence as a class (is this fair? is this extreme?). Explain your procedures and consequences for misbehaviour, linking them to the classroom contract. -
