John H Belton Trophy and war Serving -> In the war
In the years coming up to the war, the cadets would partake in small boar shooting as their practical. In another source, we talk about practical cadets. THis shows a part of practical cadets to prepare students for the war. John then participated in the war. This paints the picture at Ridley of practical and military related in order to cultivate a "Stormtrooper" Canadian attitude. -
School Picture
Lots of kids. Similar to in year 1944 -
School Picture (Another point)
Another reason the school had a lot of students in this year could be related to the things that were being built during the time. This involved the quad and many great structures to be built on campus and it was advertised respectively. Then the depression hit and these things were not carried out as quickly. This just shows the turn in the economy and how it would be as a student. Once jolly. Soon not. -
Great Depression
Even with the great depression, not all the kids left. Although there was a decrease in the amount of people. there was still a large value for education. This relates with general Curry and shows how he valued education as noted in the book about history.. Only two Ridley students dropped out of Ridley because of economic reasons - Marvel said all of this -
1932 appx. General Curry comes to talk about the value of education
Although it is very brief, I assume education relates with war as General Curry came to speak with the students. He is the person who ran the attack on Vimy Ridge. This shows how Ridley and student life were being enriched with knowledge about the war. -
Teacher Salary reduction
Here, there was a teacher salarry reduction. This again paints the picture of how hard the depression came and how hard it hit. Here is also where you see "false promises". A lot of things were said to be built but the ecnomy was suffering. Another thing that was promised by Ridley was the tuition. Ridley agreed to the public that the tuition would be need based but wasn't upheld. -
1932 School Picture
Depression starts. Less people than when in 1929 in the school picture. -
Time of new hope
When school reopened with lowerschool again, lots of donations were sent in. When General Curry came, this also attracted a lot of attention to parents interested in their kids being enriched with knowledge. Also, with the construction of Merrit house, lots of people were interested a new hope was built for the school even in times of depression. Once the school opened, lots of people joined and was apparent that Ridley was going to survive the depression. -
School Picture
Depression continues. Not a lot of people similar to 1932. Merritt house was finished in 1932 however it was difficult to fund the building and not a lot of kids to have house in the building. This proved to have economic problems with Ridley as funding became an issue. This just shows Ridley life during this time was rocky. The Iggy gym was also built during this time and proved to be a rocky time again,. -
Ranking of Cadets 1935-45
Students being ranked during this time period were sent off to war with different military ranks and purposes. An example showed with a CO in cadet band going on to be a leader of a platoon. This again paints the picture that students were preparing for war and building merit even in the practical sections of cadets. -
1937 Student Reduction
At this time during the depression, there was a decrease in students which went all the way down to 100 people. This said, there was a teacher salary upgrade. This shows how the depression was beginning to end however still present from students. -
Football Teams at Ridley
3 different teams at Ridley -
Iggy was built
-
World War II begins
-
Tribes
They had tribes and tribe competitions. This reminds me of lower school and how tribe tradition remained. This also shows how the school cultivated school life and active minds. -
Sweatercoat
On one of the sweater caots, you see a lot of badges including those of guns. This again shows practical things for cadets and paints the picture that student life revoled a lot around military aspects. -
Influx of people sending children to Canada instead of Britain
Shows how people didn't want to send kids to warzone and how Canada was a safer option. -
Least amount of people disciplined in a year
Because a lot of students left for war, I assume that less problems occured. This shows how many students participated in the war likely? -
Less people disciplined versing other years
Because a lot of students left for war, I assume that less problems occured. This shows how many students participated in the war likely? -
The Blackout
School experienced the second blackout. First one was on 1942. Organized a hiearchy system with wardens. Study was dismissed. This prepared the students for an air raid. This shows how students were always preparing for war which shows with the other sources presented. Thigns such as practical cadets and things like that really trained students to be prepared for anything to deal with military. It wasn't non-mutual as well as statistics show that students wanted to help out in the war. -
Ridley Opinions continued PART 2
During this time period, a survey of some sort was taken. On it, we see many questions. One of the questions is what person thought the best news magazine was. Regardless of the magazine, only 8 percent didn't select one. This shows how students were keeping up with news likely because their friends and families were in the war. Another question was if they were going to work in which only 12 percent said no. This showed how even wealthy students at a private institution needed to work. -
Ridley Opinion Continued
This is a continued part of the midsummer source. Another question shows that most of the school wants practical cadet training. This shows how students wanted to participate in military like activities likely to prepare. This is also symbolic of the Canadian "Storm Trooper" activites. THis sources also shows that students wanted to engage in science. In specific, they wanted a laboratory to be built. This could show another way students want to be involved in war including chemical warfare. -
School Picture - Cadet picture
Another reason why this picture had an influx of picture as the war cultivated the minds of students which enabled them to fight and enabled them to want to fight. THis is also shown by the sweater coat and statistics that students prided themselves in practical training for a chance to represent Canada nad Ridley. -
Ridleains left
Some seniors abandonned their education. This shows how the school really cultivates a mind that wants to fight in the war. A lot of the seniors did come back however to continue their education however at the time of 1944, when the allies were turning on the Germans, students picked up interest to fight for their country and make a difference. -
School Picture
War finishes. Depression over. Lots of kids just like in 1929. This shows how the depression during the time hit wealthy families in Ridley and kids were not capable of sending their kids to Ridley. -
Unconditional Surrender
In newspaper, it said through broadcast that there was a surrender from Germany. This brought joy to the people. -
Public Holiday
This realtes with the surrender. They made it a public holiday. This shows a turning point in student life as students won and all their hard work paid off. Also, you can see in the school picture in 1944 that there was more students. I imagine after the war, there will be an influx of returning students from the war and happiness in the air.
