Pokémon Heart Gold (DS)
The first game I ever saved up for. I'd played my brother's copy of Pokémon Diamond, but Heart Gold cemented my love of Pokémon. I liked exploring and doing repetitive but rewarding and exciting tasks like leveling up Pokémon, or doing the Pokéathlon. Friends had it too which was my first time sharing video games outside my family. Game Freak (2009). Pokémon Heart Gold (Nintendo DS) [Video game]. Nintendo. -
Minecraft (PC)
Whilst I'd been watching videos of the game for a while, it was actually my brother that introduced the game to me. Watched a lot of videos about it, and obsessed over it with my friends. Was my first online multiplayer game too. Have returned to it recently. Really enjoy how it encourages parallel play, with people doing different tasks in the same space. Mojang Studios (2011). Minecraft (PC) [Video game]. Mojang Studios, Xbox Game Studios. -
Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Switch)
The only Switch game I had for a while and I couldn't have cared less. It's so good. Felt meditative. Completed it and restarted it, going on 300+ hours. It reminds me of Ghibli, and got me into the Zelda franchise. Love the flexible problem solving, and am getting into the sequel now. Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Nintendo Switch) [Video game]. (2017). Nintendo. -
A Short Hike (PC)
This one stole my heart the minute I saw it. Very glad for Itch.io bundles. Sound design is also incredible. Was one of the first indie games I got, definitely the first outside of Steam. The progression feels natural and very rewarding, and its fun just wandering around. Helped me a lot during COVID lockdown. Robinson-Yu, Adam. You Awaken in a Strange Place (TTRPG)
Absolute banger of a "tabletop" RPG. It's mostly theater of the mind, completely improvised, and very collaborative. It goes off the rails every time and that's a feature, not a flaw. While I've discovered I don't have the capacity to DM a campaign of DnD, I'm more than happy to pull this one out on a whim. Andrews, Jacob (2021). Tetris Effect: Connected (PS5/Switch)
Started playing with my friends. We got absolutely immersed in it, and it's our default game when hanging out now. Liked it so much I bought it myself to play on the Switch. The sound design is incredible. Haven't played in VR, but its still stunning without. Used to play a knock-off of classic Tetris through the latter half of high school.
