National Board Certified Teacher Timeline: Allison Smatt

  • Complete Associate in Arts from Coastal Carolina Community College

    I must complete my associates degree before obtaining my bachelors degree. A bachelors degree is required in order to be eligible to become a National Board Certified Teacher.
  • Complete Bachelors in Elementary Education

    A bachelors degree is required to be eligible to become a National Board Certified Teacher.
  • Complete three years of successful teaching in an elementary school

    Three years of successful teaching is required to be eligible to become a National Board Certified Teacher.
  • Have a valid teaching license for each of the three years successfully teaching in an elementary school

    Having a valid teaching license for three years is a requirement to become eligible to be a National Board Certified Teacher.
  • Start the four components

    The four components can be submitted in any order. Candidates can complete from one to four components a year. Candidates must submit all four components within the first three years of their candidacy. While it is possible to complete the process in as little as one year, there is a five-year window to achieve certification.
  • Completing Component One: Content Knowledge

    During this component, I will demonstrate knowledge of developmentally appropriate content. I will also demonstrate my understanding of content knowledge and pedagogical practices for teaching my content area.
  • Completing Component Two: Differentiation in Instruction

    In this component, I will gather and analyze information about students’ strengths and needs, and use that information to design and implement instruction to advance student learning and achievement. I will submit selected work samples that demonstrate students’ growth over time and a written commentary that analyzes my instructional choices.
  • Completing Component Three: Teaching Practice and Learning Environment

    In this component, I will submit video recordings of interactions between me and my students. I will also submit a written commentary that I describe, analyze, and reflect on my teaching and interactions with students.
  • Completing Component Four: Effective and Reflective Practitioner

    In this component, I will demonstrate evidence of my abilities as an effective and reflective practitioner in developing and applying knowledge of my students. I will use assessments to effectively plan for and positively impact my students’ learning, and I will collaborate to advance students’ learning and growth.
