Ohio outlawed slavery
In 1802, before Ohio was actually a state, they had already outlawed slavery in Ohio. Before this outlaw, nobody really lived in Ohio. Once this was ratified, Ohio had a much higher population. Also, this law that prohibited slavery in Ohio was a requirement of the northwest ordinance. -
War of 1812
The war of 1812 was the war against the British. This was the second war that America fought against the British. Ohio had a huge impact on this war because of Lake Erie. We fought the British with our squadron of 9 ships to counter the British. We won this battle. -
Akron founded
Akron was first laid out in 1825, by Simon Perkins. Thanks to the Ohio and Erie Canal, Akron became very popular. Akron was a great spot to stop during the time of the canal. -
Canal between Akron and Cleveland was finished.
When the canal between these two cities was finished, it almost immediately turned Cleveland into a city filled with people. It made Cleveland into a "hub of a continental transportation." Products from the northeast came into Cleveland by using this new canal link. This canal was the start of the big city of Cleveland. -
Underground Railroad
The underground railroads were made for any reasons. They were a system of organized aid to help slaves escape to freedom, that was first made in the 1780's but grew popular in the 1800's. Ohio had a huge roll in Underground Railroads. Ohio was the main focus of the underground railroads because the Ohio river was the line of free people to slaves -
Oberlin college founded
Oberlin college was founded in Ohio in 1833. Oberlin was the first college to admit women. This college was also the first interracial college and obviously, the first one to go coeducational, in not only Ohio, but the whole United States. -
Akron became the "seat of summit county"
There are many reasons behind Akron becoming the seat of summit county. It's high elevation made Akron one of the highest spots in Ohio at the time. Akron became a meeting spot in summit county for shopping and trading goods. -
Comprimise of 1850
The compromise of 1850 was a pre-civil war era where we attempted one last time to settle the debate over slavery without bloodshed. This did not work so 2 things happened, California entered as a free state so much of ohios population went to California. And the other thing being we created the fugitive state law. This law stated that it was a federal offense to assist escaped slaves. This was time in which the Underground Railroad became popular. -
Civil war
The civil war started in 1861, and it was the union against the confederation. The south believed that they should be allowed to own slaves and the union thought otherwise. Ohio was a big part of the union in the war. -
Civil war ends
The union wins the civil war! After this time many states were in debt and the country needed some repairs. They needed to be a team again, a country that stood together. We also needed presidental reconstruction. -
Buchtel college was created
In 1870 Buchtel college was created. Not too long after being created a huge disaster happened. Buchtel college was burnt down. It was eventually built back together and in 1913 it was renamed Akron University. Having a world known college located in Akron gives northeast Ohio something to be known for. -
Akron children's hospital was founded
In 1890 Mary Day nursery, now known as Akron Children's Hospital, was a small buliding with few rooms to help crippled children. This was the first hospital created for children in northeast Ohio. ACH has made a huge influence on Akron and on Ohio in general because of its excellent care and high reputation. -
Akron Beacon journal was created
In 1897, the Akron Beacon Journal was created. This paper let all the citizens of Akron stay up to date on new and important events. This paper can also be looked at as a form of art. The journalists got to write and express their feelings and then publish it for people to read. -
Rubber industry booms!
The first rubber industry started in 1870 but rubber didn't become super popular until the 1900's. The first rubber factory was started by Benjamin Franklin Goodrich. Thanks to this start of one company, many more came as the result. By the 19th century Akron became the rubber capitol. -
Thedore Roosevelt Elected Vice President
In 1900 Thedore Roosevelt got elected Vice President because Mckinely was considering who his running mate would be in 1900. And so McKinley knew that Roosevelt was going to be an immensely appealing.This related back to the northeast Ohio because this decision of making Roosevelt president changed a lot of things in the state. Through Roosevelt had as many enemies as he did friends,he had an undeniable impact on the nation,living life so energetically that few could keep up with him. -
Wright Brothers first flight
The Wright Brothefs were American inventors who set work trying to figure out how to design wings for the, developing a concept called "wing warping". When they added the a moveable rudder,the Wright brothers found they had the magic formula. They succeeded in flying the first free,controlled flight of power-driven. This invention relates to the northeast Ohio and other areas because airplanes have since impacted many facets of life including travel,commerce,war and communication. -
Cleveland was the 6th largest city in the nation
Cleveland population had increased the year of 1910 because it was people coming from all over the world. Cleveland had a lot of popular businesses going on. The impact it made was population went up to 560,663. Factories and other different businesses got more workers than they ever did. -
World War 1 begins in Europe
Taking place against a backdrop of escalating tensions in the Balkans, the assassination set off a chain of events that would lead to the start of World War 1 barely one month later. To many people, the Great War--as known at the same time-- seemed to come out of the blue. In fact, the seeds of the devasting conflict had been planted long before Princip fired the fatal bullets. This impacted on the northeast Ohio later on because this also led up to why the U.S entered the War. -
U.S enters World War 1
Even before World War 1 broke out. American opinion toward Germany was already more negative than it was toward any other country in Europe. In early 1917, Germany decided to resume all-out submarine warfare on every commercial ship towards Britain,realizing that this decision would almost certainly mean war with the U.S. If this war didn't happen back then, then the British would've still been sinking the American ships in the North Atlantic and being outrageous. -
Akron's economy problems from the Great Depression ended with the United States entry to World War ll
Was needed for wartime mobilization meant the factories were again needed workers. Workers were recruited to make aircrafts and other necessary military goods. This impacted the northeast Ohio because this put factories and other businesses back to work to get ready for Workd War ll. -
Summit county infirmary
In 1921 summit county infirmary was created, It is also known as Ohio poorhouse. The Ohio poorhouse was an infirmary and a cemetery. It was one of the first hospitals and cementaries in summit county. It provided health care for people of northeast Ohio. -
Cleveland Clinic begans
The Cleveland clinic hospital has grown over the years. It was guided by the vision of George Washington, Frank Runts, and William Lower. This impacted because it gave people more job opportunities and helped the injured in need. -
United States - Dust Bowl
The Great Plains suffers devasting droughts,dust bowls,and soil erosion during the dust bowl years. This impact northeast Ohio because farms suffered and massage ecological damage. This damage was done to Midwestern and the Northern Plains areas of the country. -
Depression era in Cleveland
In January 1933, there were 99,233 Clevelanders out of work and another 25,400 with jobs, but laid off without pay or working only part time. This impacted northeast Ohio because as the number of the jobless continued to rise, local government and private charities,were overwhelmed,unable to provide food and clothes. -
Hitler declares war on the U.S
Germany declared war against the United States , in response to what was claimed to be series of provocations by the United government. This decision to declare war was made by Hitler,apparently offhand, almost without consultion. This impacted because we had to get ready for war and push certain things aside. -
Cleveland city council passes a fair employment practice law
The new law prohibited discrimination on account of race,religion,color. This impacted because it only did not cover private sector jobs but also municipal employment and contacting. -
Nearly 275,000 people resided in Akron
Following World War ll, Akron's residents faced some difficult financial times. The traditional industries that allowed the city to prosper began to decline. This made an impacted because Akron had experienced declining population and business didn't have enough of employees. -
Korean War starts, North invades
The United States/Nation as the principal participant, joined the war on the side of the South Koreans, and the peoples republic of china came to North Koreans aid. This impacted northeast Ohio because more than a million combat casualties had been suffered on both sides. This means we lost a lot of soldiers that year. -
Clavin Coolidge as its presidental candidate
Coolidge had been vice-president under Warren G. Harding and became president in 1923 when Harding died during his first term in office. He gained a reputation as a small-government conservative. He impacted northeast Ohio because he did a lot for the country and he did a lot for the middle class people. Coolidge hoped that the middle class can express their opinions. -
Cleveland transit system becomes an era
This becomes a problem because the Cleveland railway began to operate a downtown loop. Which caused the transit company to seek a more economical vehicle mode. This impacted the northeast Ohio area because this started the bus operation.
