My Road to Literacy

  • Nursery rhymes🎶

    Nursery rhymes🎶
I didn't move to the United States until I was about seven years old. Because I lived in an Arabic-speaking country, I only spoke Arabic. English nursery rhymes would be broadcast on television. I'd watch them every day! Even though I didn't understand half of the words, I loved English music! I'd sing them over and over again!
  • Moving to the USA!🇺🇸

    Moving to the USA!🇺🇸
We moved to the US when I was around 7 years old. My mother was born in the US, and she would share stories with me about her time here. I was thrilled! The idea that I was traveling to America surprised me but also scared me!
  • School!🏫

    School!🏫
When I first started school, it took me about three months to learn to speak English, and once I did, everything was easy for me, except GRAMMAR! Grammar was so perplexing to me! But, thankfully, I eventually got the hang of it!
  • Movies🎥

    Movies🎥
I used to love movies as a kid and I still do! I believe they helped me develop my literacy skills! Like books, movies taught me how to use figurative language.
  • Translating for kids!

    Translating for kids!
By the time I was in fifth grade, I was pretty much fluent in English. The teacher informed the class one day that a new student would be arriving who did not speak English, but only spoke Arabic. She asked if I would mind translating for her, and I, of course, said that I would be delighted to translate for a new student!
  • The Library📚

    The Library📚
Growing up, my mother would constantly take me to the library, which was good for my literacy and language skills. One of my all-time favorite book series was Judy Moody!
  • Traveling!

    Traveling!
Every summer, my family and I travel to several countries! The benefit of English is that it is a universal language! I would be able to communicate with everyone in any country I visited!

    Over the years.....🕜
My language and literacy skills improved significantly over the years, thanks to all of the wonderful teachers I had! And now I'm sitting in an Ap Lang class! Who would have thought?
