  • Getting on the Boat

    Getting on the Boat
We were three when we were put on a boat along with our big brother Burt, our mother, and our father. There were people everywhere, and it was really crowded. I remember getting hard brown bread and a little bit of meat on the holidays. Mom says we are immigrants, whatever that means.
  • Landing at Angel Island

    Landing at Angel Island
My stomach growls as I step off the ship, my sister, Lauguhana, is being held by my father, and I by my big brother. We stand in a line that is hundreds of people long, and we wait for what seems like forever. We get our turn, and some man examines me, I was released, so we left.
  • Saving Up

    Saving Up
We have lived in a little shack for a long time, and my parents are ready for a change. My father, mother, and brother are all working during the day, so we can save up enough money to move west. My father wants to start working in a Gold Mine. He thinks it'll be better for us, so we're saving money.
  • Moving West

    Moving West
We finally got enough money for moving, and we are part of a wagon train right now. There are about 50 wagons in our train, and we are steadily moving. We have made friends that have the same goals as us. It takes forever to move, and can be scary at times, but I am excited.
  • Life in the West

    Life in the West
We made it out west, and thankfullly our father found a job working in a gold mine. Our brother helps him, and we found a good bit of it, enough to live very confertably. Our mother doesn't allow us to go to the mines often due to the dangerous men that are there. So far, life is good.
  • Making it big

    Making it big
Life has been very good to us, our brother found a great deal of gold. My father was called over to help, and they managed to collect it all, and bring it home without any serious injuries. Though my brother had to take off work for a week due to bruises, our life is now very good.
  • Disease taking over

    Disease taking over
Disease has come to our area, and mother says that one of the men brought it home. Lauguhana has already gotten it, and I am coming close behind. I am not really scared though, the world has been kind to us, and I know that we'll be okay. This thought conforts me as darkness closes over me.
