    Muhammed's Birth
    Muhammad was born in Mecca. His mother died shortly after his birth. His father had previously passed away. Muhammad became an orphan.

    His Uncle Aboo Talib and his grandfather Abdul-Mutlib raised him. At the age of nine he began going on trade trips along with his uncle where he met with people of different nations and religions. His character was respected by all, and he was given the name of “The Trustworthy.”

    At the age of 25, he was proposed to by a 40-year-old woman named Sayyida Khadija. They were married for 25 years.

    Muhammad make long treks to Cave Hira where he fasted and meditated. He had a vision, and the Angel Gabriel instructed him to recite such words of beauty and force that he attributed them to God.

    After having many more visions, Muhammad revealed the message he was receiving to his tribe. They were gathered verse by verse and later would become the Quran.

    Over the next decade, Muhammed and his followers were persecuted for departing from traditional Mecca’s tribal ways. The dominant tribe levied a ban on trade with Muhammad's people. They faced near famine conditions. The leaders of this tribe attempted to assassinate Muhammad.

    Muhammad’s wife passed away. After that he married ten other women and girls. One of his marriages was to Sayyida Aicha when she was 9 years old.

    Along with a few hundred followers, Muhammad traveled to Yathrib to act as a mediator because there was a civil war. Yathrib became known as the City of the Prophet. Yathrib is where the first Muslim community was built, and his followers grew in number.

    The Meccans were unhappy with Muhammad’s success. There were three battles over the next three years. In March 628 a treaty was signed that recognized Muslims as a new force in Arabia.

    Muhammad returned to live in Medina. During that three-year period he consolidated most of the Arabian Peninsula under Islam. He returned to Mecca one last time to perform a pilgrimage, and tens of thousands of Muslims joined him. Three months later on June 8, 632 he died after a brief illness. He is buried in the mosque in Medina.
