Mecca at the time of Muhammad's Birth
The Arabian Peninsula was an overlooked zone in the battle between the Roman and Persian empires. As it was a harsh desert, there were only a few settlements. Mecca became one of the settlements because it had a spring. At the time of Muhammad's birth, Mecca was the site of an annual pilgrimage to the Kaaba. Kaaba is now known as the house of Allah. However, at the time of Muhammad's birth, many gods were worshiped there.

    Struggles in Mecca
Between 610 CE and 622 CE converts to Islam were few. Muhammad's novel ideas, particularly that there was only one God and that he was the Messenger of that God, were not well received. He had particular resistance from the merchants as they relied on the pilgrims that honoured the many gods of the Kaaba. He eventually had no protectors left in Mecca and his life was in danger.

    Hijra
Life had become difficult for the Muslims in Mecca so Muhammad led the people of Islam north to Medina as the people of Medina offered Muhammad a safe place to settle. This migration from Mecca to Medina became known as the Hijra and marks the beginning of the Muslim calendar. This is where Muhammad set up his first community and governed it by his revelations.

    Return to Mecca

    Return to Mecca
Although many Meccans had joined Muhammad in Medina, those who remained behind fought back. Eventually Muhammad marched on Mecca and the Meccans surrendedered. Mecca then accepted Islam and Muhammad returned to Medina. One final pilgirimage to Mecca in 632, sparked the ritual of the pilgrimage that Muslims are asked to make at least once in their lifetime (Hajj). During Muhammad's final Hajj, Muhammad spoke his final sermon and expressed a message of justice and equality.
