    Manifest Destiny is the belief that the United States had the Divine Right to expand west all the way to the Pacific Ocean. The citizens of the U.S believed that God had given them the right to expand.

    The Thirteen Colonies Part Two
    The American Revoloution lasted eight years. The war officially ended when the Treaty Of Paris was signed. Once the war was over, the colonies were free and became a new nation. This nation became known as the United States of America. Unfortunately for the new nation, the costs of war had set them into debt and the economy was terribly weakened.

    Original Thirteen Colonies
    The thirteen colonies weren't alway owned by the United States. The thirteen colonies were originally owned by Great Britain. On July fourth, 1776, the Second Continental Congress signed the Declaration of Independence. The Declaration of Independence was the colonies' way to say that they wished to be free from British control. Eventually, Britain and the colonies began to fight of the colonies' independece.     The United States gained control of the Northwest Territory partially from militray conquest due to the American Revoloution and through the Northwest Ordinance of 1787. Through the Northwest ordinance, five territories became states. These states were Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Ohio. continued on the next slide

    Northwest Territory Part Two
    For a territory to become a state, the territory must match the requirements. To become a state, the territory of have a populaion of at least sixty thousand, a draft of a Bill f Rights and Constitution, a request to become a state, public education, no slavery, and a written approval or ratification from Congress. The requirement of no slavery in the territory enraged many citizens, but that is a different story.

    I couldn't find an exact date so I just put the beginning of the year The U.S. gained the Louisiana territory by purchasing it through France. President Thomas Jefferson was in office when the U.S purchased the Louisiana Territory for fifteen million dollars. The addition of the land from this purchase nearly doubled the size of the United States. continued on another event

    The Louisiana Purchase
    Part of the land purchased during the Louisiana Purchase was the city of New Orleans and the Mississippi River. These additions of land were so important to the U.S. economy because of their locations. The Mississippi River helped trade through the states and New Orleans was so close to the sea, so it was easier for the states to trade with other countires. Since it was easier to trade, more goods were sold and the addition of more money made the economy boost.

    General Jackson's actions were unconstitutional since he attacked without orders from Monroe. To settle the conflict and avoid war, the U.S. and Spain signed the Adams-Onis Treaty. With this treaty, the United States gained Florida. In return, the U. S. gave up claims to Texas, and paid five million dollars for claims against Spain.

    The Southerns grew angry with the Seminole Indians because the Seminole people were raiding towns in south, and stole American goods and slaves. Once they stole goods and helped slaves escape, the Seminoles would retreat to Spanish territory. Presient James Monroe sent General Andrew Jacks to hopefully settle conflict at the Florida border. While there, General Jackson crossed the border and attacked and murdered many Seminole Indians. continued on next slide

Americans were immigrating to Texas because they believed more land was available and that they could own slaves due to promises they recieved from the Mexican Government. Once the settlers were in Mexico, the government went back on their deal by stating slavery was illegal. continued on next slide

    When the Mexican government started to restrict the Texans, the citizens decided to break free an become a separate republic. A republic is a form of a representative government. Three battles took place in the Texas Revoloution, the Battle of the Alamo, the Battle of the Goliad and the Batlle of San Jacinto. The battle of the Alamor was a major loss to the Texan army. That is why citizens created the cry, "Remember the Alamo!" continued on separate slide

    The Battle of Goliad was yet another loss for the Texan army. Military leader, Santa Anna ordered that James Fannin and hsi men were to be hanged. Nurse Francita Alavez saved seven of Fannin's men from death. For her merciful act, Nurse Alavez was called the Angel of Goliad. The final battle of the Texas Revoloution was the battle of San Jacinto. continued on separate slide

    The Battle of San Jacinto was a surprise attack that threw of Anna and his men enough, that the Texans came to victory. The diffeat humiliated Santa Anna, and when he returned home, he was thrown out of power. Texas was now a republic. Unfortunately, the newly formed republic had many economic problems. Texas' economy was mostly based on farming and ranching, so there was little to no industry. Texas had many resources, but little money. The new country was mostly bankrupt. *continued new slide

    Another problem for Texas, was that Mexico still considered Texas their property. Also, the U.S. did not allow Texas to enter the Union as a state, because it could lead to an expansion of slavery. This was a large disadvantage to the Northern states.
  • Mexican Cession

    The main issue that Mexico and the U.S. argued over was if Rio Grande was the Southern border of Texas was Rio Grande. The two countries battled until the two signed the Treaty of Guadalupe. Under the Mexican Cession, the states California, Nevada and Utah were created. Also parts of Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado and Wyoming were formed. This addition of land increased the size of the U.S. by 25%.

    Great Britain originally shared control of the Oregon Territory with the United States. The U.S. was trying to avoid war with Britain, so the two countires signed a treaty. This treaty allowed the United States to keep all of oregon's land above the 49th parallel. With this addition of land, present day Oregon was formed. The land also established a border between present day Canada and the united States.

    The Gadsden Purchase
    The U.S. agreed to purchase the land under the Gadsden purchase to avoid war with Mexico and conflict within the United States. The United States paid ten million dollars for the land. The addition of this land formed the present day states of Arizona and New Mexico. Witht he addition of the Gadsden purchase, the Manifest Destiny was finally complete since the U.S. completely expanded to the Pacific Ocean.
