The United States and Spain define the boundaries of the Louisiana Purchase. Spain surrenders its claims to the Pacific Northwest and the United States agrees top recognize Spain's sovereignty in Texas. (Later America will take over Texas.)

The American people spread west. Mostly fur traders and missionaries had been traveling to this area since 1820. In 1843 the first major wagon train to the northwest departs from Elm Grove, Missouri, on the Oregon Trail.
