The Louisiana Territory
In 1803, James Monroe was sent to buy New Orleans for $7.5 million. He ended getting ALL of Louisiana for $15 million. To most Americans the Louisiana Purchase was the biggest bargain in history, with each acre only 2-3 cents. -
Lewis and Clark Expedition
Meiwether Lewis and William Clark led an exploration to examine the newly required land of America. -
Florida
Having gotten Louisiana through bargainng, America next focused on Florida. Spain colonized Florida in the late 1500's, and was flooded with a bunch of Indians by the late 1800's. -
Texas
There was a reason many Americans felt that Texas was so valuable. Much of this region was well suited for growing cotton, the South's most valuable cash crop. many southerners hoped that one day Texas would become part of the United States. -
Oregon Country
Far to the northwest of Texas lay Oregon Country. This enormous, tree-covered wilderness stretched from the Rocky Mountains to the Pacific Ocean. Many people clamied this as theirs, but America was determined to have it. -
