  • Strawberry Shortcake

    Strawberry Shortcake
When I was a baby until the time I
started school my mother always let me watch Strawberry Shortcake. There's pictures of me on my 3rd birthday with the cute little pop up books about strawberry shortcake. This was the first of many books I ever owned.
  • Learning My Name

    Learning My Name
Before I started kindergarten, my mother, who teaches at OES, taught me to write my full name. She opened a whole world of writing for me.
  • Junie B. Jones

    Junie B. Jones
In first grade, my teacher read us the amazing books about Junie B... This was the first ever chapter book that I had ever heard about. After Junie B Jones was introduced into my life, I started reading bigger and better things.
  • Ballin'

    Ballin'
As soon as I could walk I was thrown into basketball, mostly because my brother and was fairly decent at it. Little did I know that basketball in fact included reading skills. Reading keeps your mind sharp and alert. Plus most of our plays are written down and being able to actually comprehend them is a whole other tasks itself.
  • Worksheet after Worksheet...

    Worksheet after Worksheet...
In second grade my teacher made us do every single kind of literacy worksheet she could find. So many broken pencils and tears were left in that classroom. At least now I can still put a sentence together... Right?
  • The Love of My Life

    The Love of My Life
4th grade rolled around and I was not a huge fan of reading. One day my teacher came in and said that we would be reading aloud a new book about the Greek Gods. I was in love. I never knew that I could mix something I didn't really like with something I loved to create something amazing. We continued to read the Percy Jackson series until 5th grade when my grade went to middle school.
  • The Dreaded Middle School Years

    The Dreaded Middle School Years
Going to a new school is always scary. My new English teacher was so nice. She let us read for 20 minutes every day. During those 20 minutes, I found John Green, my favorite author. Without the work of John Green my reading skills would have most likely hit the fan.
  • Softballin'

    Softballin'
As much as I love this sport, sometimes the terminology gets tricky. One time I was playing first base and the coach yelled "Salt Lick", i quickly glanced at my arm band not even reading what it meant. In my head I just new it meant throw to third base. I was wrong... This made me become a very close reader.
  • Romeo And Juliet

    Romeo And Juliet
In my 8th grade English class we read the famous tale of Romeo and Juliet. Before reading this, I had never really opened my horizon to older literature. Ever since reading the play, I have been interested in other famous pieces.
  • Public Speaking

    Public Speaking
Last year in Digital Literacy one of the requirements for the class is public speaking. After the anticipation of speaking in front of the class had built up, I realized it really wasn't that bad. Ever since then I have been a much more vocal person.
