Leonardo da Vinci was apprenticed to Andrea del Verrocchio a very good sculptor and painter. He was around 15 when his father apprenticed him. Christopher Columbus discovered the West Indies in 1492. He took three ships the Nina, Pinta and the Santa Maria on a voyage to sail west to Asia. In 1501 explorers from Portugal went to Brazil and established a colony. When they arrived they found the indigenous people. The people offered parrot feather headdresses to the Portuguese as a peace offering. The natives became very interested in the Portuguese items and their religion. In September 14, 1515 the battle of Marignano ended. The battle resulted in the take back or recovery of Milan from the Swiss Confederation. It also made the peace treaty of Geneva. Leonardo lived out his final years in France with title of "Painter and Engineer and Architect to the king." Francis l gave him this title along with the freedom to paint or draw whatever he wanted. In 1519 Ferdinand Magellan set out around the world to prove the earth was round. Magellan started in Spain and took five ships with him. He wanted to do two things on this trip. One was to prove the earth was round. The second was to find a trade route west to the spice islands. He did both of those things and he was the first European to cross the Pacific ocean.
