Birth-3 months
An infant listens to others and learns to coo and make sounds. -
4 to 6 months
At this age the child begins to babble using the beginning sounds of p, b, and m. -
7 months to 1 year
Begins to understand words, such as cup, bottle, mom and dad. -
1 to 2 year olds
Follows simple directives and questions. -
2 to 3 year olds
At two to three years of age a child begins using two to three word phrases. Example: "I want milk". -
3 to 4 year olds
Answers uncomplicated questions when asked things like who, what, when, where, how and why. -
4 to 5 year olds
Children begin using detail when using full sentences. -
6 to 7 year olds
These children possess language skills that include 20,000 plus words. -
7 to 8 years old
Children are able to understand and respond to difficult questions and are able to develop complex sentences. -
10 to 11 years of age
Children this age have developed the skills to use figurative words while speaking. Example: "My oatmeal is very hot and sticky". -
13 to 18 year old
Teenagers generally have developed language skills that essentially push them to speak as an adult.
