Language Development of Children Birth to 18 months

    An infants first form of communication is crying. When the newborn is happy they will make cooing sounds.
  • 2 to 3 months

    2 to 3 months

    Infant will alter their cry according to the situation. There will be a distinction between a hunger cry and a tired cry.
  • 3 to 4 months

    3 to 4 months

    Infants tend to cry less and begin making gurgling sounds and consonant sounds such as "baba".
  • 5 to 6 months

    5 to 6 months

    Infants begin to create intonations. They respond to caregivers talk and facial expressions, begins to babble to themselves and laughs when they play.
  • 7 to 12 months

    7 to 12 months

    Babies are babbling with a greater diversity and create new sound combinations and intonations. They will have pretend conversations taking turns in talking. They will also recognize familar objects.
  • 12 months

    12 months

    The important first words have been spoken, usually "mummum" or "dada". They may know up to five words well enough to use them.
  • 15 months

    15 months

    Toddler will raise voice at the end of an utterance indicating a question. They will also use hand gestures to complement speech. Maybe able to say up to 6 simple words.
  • 16 months

    16 months

    Toddler is talking rather than babbling. They call to get attention, shake head for yes and no and use common consonant sounds such as t, d, n, w, and h.
  • 18 months

    Toddler has a vocabulary between 20 to 50 words, including nouns such as 'mama', verbs such as "eat", and adjectives such as 'cold', and are able to combine two words together.
  • 18 to 24 months

    18 to 24 months

    During this time frame the toddler will start putting three word phrases together,"Daddy go by-by", "milk make mess".
