The Golden Age ended...At least, politically, with the Treaty of the Pyrenees. In art and form, the Golden Age still lived, for around 40 more years. -
Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz dies
The last great writer of the Golden Age, or Siglo de Oro as it is known in Spanish, dies. Sister(Sor) Juana was a poet from an age of flourishing arts and letters in the Spanish Empire, which included Spain and the Spanish-speaking countries of Latin America. -
Francisco Franco rules as a dictator
From 1936 to 1975, Francisco ruled Spain as a dictator, seeking the Spanish return of the Strait of Gibraltar from the United Kingdom. The later years of Franco's rule saw the birth of the tourism industry, allowing Spain to catch up economically. -
Franco dies, King Juan takes over
King Juan Carlos takes over as Franco dies, his dictatorship ending at Franco's deathbed. Juan Carlos began the transition to democracy as he became ruler. Juan ruled from 1975 to 2014, when he abdicated in favor of his son, Felipe VI.
