Blade Runner Released
Released in June 1982 Blade Runner is a film set in the near future which entails the battle between Deckard, a blade runner (Robot Hunter), and a group of replicants (genetically engineered robots) who have returned to earth to seek revenge after being banned from earth and treated as slaves. Although it was not wildly popular at the time of it's release, it has gained popularity and a steady following, and several other cuts of the film have since been released. -
Burning Chrome is Published
Burning Chrome is a collection of short stories first published in 1982. Writen by William Gibson, it is considered to be one of the first Cyber Punk writings. With their vividly human characters and their remorseless, hot-wired futures, these stories are simultaneously science fiction at its sharpest and instantly recognizable Polaroids of the postmodern condition (The Cyberpunk Project 2004). -
Cyberpunk is Published
In 1983 Bruce Bethke published the short story "Cyberpunk". He was actually the first person to use the word cyberpunk. The book is about a group of teenage hackers/crackers and tells of their delinquence and deviance in the cyber world (Rivas 2011).They cut school and go joy-riding around "the Net" on their hopped-up portable computers, committing casual acts of vandalism. -
Neuromancer is published
Neuromancer is a 1984 novel by William Gibson, notable for being the most famous early cyberpunk novel. It presents an image of the future. There is corruption everywhere and the essence of being human seems to be slipping away. In his novel Gibson portrays not only what the future of technology may hold, but some of the negative externalities that directly effect human nature and social interaction (The Cyberpunk Project 2007). -
The Matrix is released
The Matrix is a 1999 American science fiction action film written and directed by Larry and Andy Wachowski. The film depicts a future in which reality as perceived by most humans is actually a simulated reality or cyberspace created by sentient machines to pacify and subdue the human population, while their bodies' heat and electrical activity are used as an energy source.
