The term cybernetic is defined as ‘the scientific study and communication in the animal and the machine,' introduced by Norbert Wiener. -
The Naked Lunch and the beginning of cyberpunk.
William S. Burroughs began writing The Naked Lunch and published it 4 years later in 1959. Although not considered as 'science fiction', it did predict future social changes like liposuction and the crack epidemic. He is seen as as the forerunner of Cyberpunk. -
The Sex Pistol's revive 'Punk'.
The Sex Pistols form as a band and and create an energy that was directed against the establishment. They were responsible for reviving its meaning and initiating the punk movement in the United Kingdom and inspiring many later punk and alternative rock musicians. -
Blade Runner and Cyberpunk.
Blade runner introduces the postmodern science fiction genre in 1982 and can be seen as a quintessential example of the cyberpunk style and theme. Cyberpunk plots often center on a conflict among hackers, artificial intelligences, and megacorporations, and tend to be set in a distopian, near-future Earth. -
Burning Chrome and Cyberspace.
William Gibson, a speculative fiction novelist, coined the term 'cyberspace' in his short story- the first cyberspace short story- Burning Chrome. -
'EFF'.
The Electronic Frontier Foundation was founded to defend rights in the digital world. It assisted with safety and privacy in the cyber world.

Cyberpunk makes headline.
Cyberpunk was featured as the cover story in Time Magazine in its februray issue. The exposure of the genre introduced many to cyberpunk, became fans of the fast sci-fi genre which was set in the near future that used gritty aesthetics and high technology. -
Tokyo NOVA and Cyberpunk Games.
Tokyo Nova is a cyberpunk role-playing game, which is set in an alternate near-future Tokyo. Using cards instead of dice, where the suits correspond to four abilities:
Spade- Reason
Club- Passion
Heart- LIfe
Diamond- Mundaneness -
The Matrix.
The first of The Matrix Trilogy was released and similair to its cyberpunk partner, it depicts a dystopian future. The movie focuses on a 'reality' perceived by most humans that is actually a simulated reality called "the Matrix", created by machines to subdue the human population. -
Cyberpunk continuation in movies.
Movies like 'Repo! The Genetic Opera' are loosely based off the genre of cyberpunk. Set in a dispoian future, an epidemic of organ failures has devastated the planet by 2056. The mega-corporation GeneCo provides organ transplants on a payment plan. Clients who default on payments are hunted down by Repo Men: skilled assassins. -
