Texas Admitted to the Union
After gaining its independence from Mexico, Texas became a part of the Union (United States) in 1845 when President John Tyler signed the Congressional Resolution to annex Texas. -
US Tried to Buy Land (Slidell and Polk)
John Slidell is sent to Mexico by President Polk to try to buy California and New Mexico. President Herrera refused to meet with Sidel due to Mexican citizens thinking he is going to sell land and calling him a traitor. -
US Troops Stationed at Disputed Border
General Tayloy's army marched towards the Rio Grande, into the disputed territory that was claimed by both Mexico and the United Stated after a diplomatic mission failed. -
US Declares War
Congress approves Polk's request to declare war with Mexico. They supply 50,000 volenteer soldiers and $10 million for the war effort. -
US Victories (Battle & Capture of Monterrey)
General Taylor and his army of 6,640 men captured a road, and therefore cut off a Mexican army from reinforcements. American forcen bombarded the army from east and west until General Pedro Ampudia called for an 8 week truce and hande the city (Monterrey) over to the Americans. -
Mexico City Surrendered
After a 14 hour fight, the Mexican Army is unable to get reinforcements and surrenders the city to the Americans. Americans occupy the city on the 14th of September. -
Treaty of Guadelupe Hidalgo
Treaty was signed in Guadelupe Hidalgo. The treaty said that in exchange for $15 million to cover Mexican war damages, the Mexican government must give the Unites States 55% of their territory.
