  • Jefferson and the Barbary Pirates

    Jefferson and the Barbary Pirates
President Jefferson had to deal with pirates off the coast of northern Africa (the Barbary Coast). The rulers of these cities demanded tribute (money) in order to use their waters for trade. The Barbary pirates went as far as to hold US ships and sailors for ransom.

Barbary Pirate Discussion - Trade and Tribute: Protection or Extortion
Seeking the support of other trading nations received the most, though not a majority, support. Several argued there was strength in numbers.

The next most popular option was to try to overthrow the Barbary Nations' leaders.
The final option that received support was blockading the Barbary ports until they gave in to our demands to stop the tributes.
  • Monroe Doctrine

    Monroe Doctrine
The Monroe Doctrine was a policy established by the fifth president of the Unites States- James Monroe. The policy basically told Europe and the rest of the world to stay out of the western hemisphere and that the U.S. was in charge in this part of the world.

Monroe Doctrine Discussion - Setting Foreign Policy
While some of you held to the belief that your nation only should use military force when attacked, almost everyone thought that your nation should help a smaller neighboring nation against a larger nation.Whether to permit your nation to build a highway through a smaller nearby nation generated the most discussion and disagreement. Many thought that each nation was entitled to decide how to use its own land…
  • Colonists and Early Americans vs. Native Americans

Colonists and Early Americans vs. Native Americans
As the relationship between the Native Americans and the colonists and later on, Americans, unfolded, conflict arose. The tribes saw a threat to their centuries-old lifestyle as the new settlers expanded their territory and the two groups fought.

Colonists/Americans vs. Native Americans Discussion - To War or Not to War, That is the Question
First and foremost, a lot of you wanted Hope and Jaguar to compromise. As one person said – “Peace treaty, split the land, hug it out.” Dividing the land in half between Hope and the Jaguar people was the compromise mentioned by most of you.

Second, another group of people said that since one side or the other owned the land, there was no reason to compromise. Those arguing for Hope said that if the Jaguar people did not leave, then Hope should use force to drive them off the land. Those ar
  • The Civil War - A Leader's Challenge

    The Civil War - A Leader's Challenge
Lincoln was one of four different candidates for president in 1860. While he won, he didn’t have anywhere near the majority of the vote. The situation was an extremely difficult one.
The issue of slavery was downplayed so you couldn't tell it was the American Civil War. That said, this war was certainly about slavery, the economic system in the South based on slavery, and the issue of states’ rights.
  • The Spanish-American War

    The Spanish-American War
In the late 1800s Spain was in control of the island of Cuba, but Cuba was rebelling against Spain. The Spanish government had a number of territories, but their power had been in decline for quite a while.
Following the Monroe Doctrine, the U.S. sent ships to patrol the situation and to make sure everything was “alright” in the western hemisphere. The U.S. is also interested in gaining power and colonies around the world to strengthen its economy and military.
  • The Spanish-American War Discusson - What Should the Bronx Do?

The Spanish-American War Discusson - What Should the Bronx Do?
Much of what you discussed addressed the Bronx military ship sunk in the Ram harbor. Many argued that the Bronx needed to investigate what caused the ship to sink. The Bronx had to make sure that El Dorado was responsible before going to war. A lot of Bronx people could die in a war and war cost a lot of money. Others argued the Bronx needed to go to war since El Dorado likely had sunk the ship. If nothing else, war was a way to protect Ram from El Dorado.
  • World War I

    World War I
When World War I broke out, the United States did not want to just jump right in. Many people believed that the U.S. should stay out of a European war, as getting involved would lead to many American deaths and potentially little gain. Others thought that Americans should get involved to promote our form of government. When the Central Powers started messing with American ships headed for Europe, opinions started to change to support war.
  • World War I Discussion: Resisting or Not, the Gravitational Pull of War

World War I Discussion: Resisting or Not, the Gravitational Pull of War
This situation was harder than past ones since there was not a morally right or wrong way to respond. The one exception was whether you should send soldiers to fight if there was not a good reason to go to war. Putting the troops in danger so as to avoid the possibility of war later did not seem right to many of you. You engaged in a cost-benefit analysis as you tried to decide whether to get involved and, if so, which alliance to side with.
