  • Arrived in Egypt

    The 9th Battalion arrived in Egypt on 2 December 1914, after which they undertook a period of intense training.
  • Arrived at Gallipoli

    Coming ashore early on 25 April 1915 at Anzac Cove, the battalion joined the rest of 3rd Brigade. Lieutenant Duncan Chapman was the first soldier ashore at Gallipoli.
  • Left Gallipoli

    A bout of typhoid in August 1915 caused Joseph to return to Egypt. He re-joined his unit on Lemnos just before the withdrawal. (the date he returned is unknown)
  • Return to Egypt

    In Egypt the 9th Battalion provided a cadre of experienced personnel to the newly formed 49th Battalion.
  • Arrived at France

    In March 1916, the battalion sailed to France. On arrival, the 9th Battalion deployed to the Somme.
  • Extended Leave

    Joseph was granted extended leave in December 1918 – 75 days “special 1914 leave” for those who had served through the first year of the conflict.
  • Return to Australia

    In June 1919, Joseph returned to Australia.
