  • Cotton Gin

    Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin in April 1793 in Georgia. It's a machine that separates cotton fibers from their seeds. It was needed to allow better productivity than manual cotton separation. It caused massive growth in the production of cotton in the U.S. , mostly in the South
  • Telegraph

    The first succesful use of an electrical telegraph was inveted by Samuel Morse. This occured in 1836-1838 in New York. This allowed for easier and faster communications in long distance. The telegraph is a device that used morse code for communications using electric charges and wires. This changed society because it had a role in the CIvil War and the first step for inventions of long distance communication devices.
  • Typewriter

    The first "practical" typewriter was credited to Christopher Sholes in 1868. This was in Wisconsin. It is a machine that uses keys that prints out the characters by making ink impressions. This was needed because it allowed easier writing by typing rather than hand writting. This changed society by allwing many people type books or articles without hand writting it. Most books in the 1900s were typed on a type writer.
  • Phonograph

    The phonograph was invented by Thomas Edison in 1877 in New Jersey. It is a device used to record and replay sounds from a cylinder, or later from a vinyl disc (record). This invention was needed to record and share sounds. It changed soiciety by allowing the first step of recordable devices. It allowed the evolution of the cassete and cd to easily share recorded sounds
  • Light bulb

    It was credited for its invention to Thomas Edison. The lightbulb was invented in 1878 in New Jersey. The lightbulb is an invention that produces light with the use of electricity. This invention was needed to replace the use of gas lamps or wood. This invention changed society by converting the universal used of form of lighting from gas to electricity.
