Inventors and Innovators Timeline

  • Flying Shuttle

    Flying Shuttle
    • Invented by John Kay
•Use- improvement to looms that enabled weavers to weave better.
•Advantages- it was a much more efficient process that doubled the production of cotton, and it was easier than manual weaving.
•Disadvantages-took four spinners to keep up with the production, and the spinners had to wait for sufficient amount of yarn to be done.
•John Kay's Flying Shuttle is still used today , and it is also now made as a automatic version.
  • Spinning Jenny

    Spinning Jenny
    •Invented by James Hargreaves
•Use-Spin more thread at one time to get the job done quicker
•Advantages- Allowed more threads and yarn to be produced by less spinners
•Disadvantages- Produced weaker thread so the quality decreased
    • Today, James Hargreaves's Spinning jenny is still used today but, it uses more spindles to make more thread.
  • Water Frame

    Water Frame
    • Invented by Richard Arkwright
    • Use- Spin cotton threads by water power
    • Advantages- Stronger threads, less labor required
•Disadvantages- Took away many jobs, and needed a location with a large and steady flow of water.
•Use today- Richard Arkwright's Water frame is not use today is replaced by electrical machines.
  • Spinning Mule

    Spinning Mule
    • Invented by Samuel Crompton
    • Use- Produce large amounts of fine, strong yarn
•Advantages- Many different types of yarn could now be made
•Disadvantages- People were being replaced by the machine, and spinners were getting their skin exposed to the oil that lubricated the machine
    • Samuel Crompton's Spinning Mule is still used today to spin wool and alpaca.
  • Steam Engine

    Steam Engine
    •Invented by James Watt
    •Use-remove water from mines
•Advantages- Made vehicles run,it could be located anywhere, and was more powerful and than other engines
    • Disadvantages-Was very heavy and hard to move around, not very safe to use,and it had a very low efficiency.
    • Today James Watt's Steam Engine is used today to run nuclear power plants..
  • Steam Locomotive

    Steam Locomotive
    •Invented by Richard Trevithick
    •Use- Transport people and goods
•Advantages-Improved transportation of goods and passenger, increased urbanization and population,
    • Disadvantages- Very dangerous, Main source of air pollution,
    • Richard Trevithick's Steam locomotive is still used today and was added to create the railroad system that we have today.
  • Steamboat

    Steamboat
    •Invented by Robert Fulton
•Use- Carry goods and passengers across water
•Advantages- Increased transportation, was more efficient, and allowed more people to trade
    • Disadvantages-Self-sufficiency decreased, and people could depend on themselves
    • Robert Fulton's Steamboats are used commercially , and are used in places such as theme park
  • locomotive

    locomotive
    •Invented by George Stephenson
•Use- Transportation of goods and people
•Advantages- Faster , more efficient with trading, and it reduced isolation
    • Disadvantages- The building of railways for it was expensive, and labor was forced on many people
    • George Stephenson's Locomotive has improved and is still a huge type of transportation used today.
  • Pasteurization

    Pasteurization
    •Invented by Louis Pasteur
•Use- Killing bacteria in many products like milk
•Advantages- Didn't cost as much, and products were not as harmful
    • Disadvantages- There was a lack of nutrients, and the pasteurization took the good bacteria out.
•Louis Pasteur's pasteurization is still used today in many dairy products.
  • Manufacturing Steel

    Manufacturing Steel
    •Invented by Henry Bessemer
    •Use- The making of steel
•Advantages-Lower the prices in steel production, and produced steel in larger quantities
    • Disadvantages-It increased child labor, bad work conditions, and increased factory production
    • Henry Bessemer's Making in manufacturing steel, is not used and today there are machines that uses his process sch as the furnace.
  • Light Bulb

    Light Bulb
    •Invented by Thomas Edison
•Use-Converts energy to heat and light
•Advantages- cheap, small and transportable, and could be used for long periods of time
    • Disadvantages- fragile,if used for too long, could catch on fire, and they didn't always work.
    • Thomas Edison's light bulb is still used today to produce light in many places
  • Alternating Current Power

    Alternating Current Power
    •Invented by Nikola Tesla
    •Use-Delivering electric power
•Advantages-cheaper and a higher efficiency, made life more easier
    • Disadvantages- Light pollution, and a very large use in electrical energy.
•Nikola Tesla's Alternating current, is still used today to power many thing used in our home and in everyday life.
