In the Late 1700's Thomas Newcomb and James Watt improved the steam powered engine. The steam powered engine opened up two other crucial doorways to the industrial revolution, Coal and Steel. -

Word of the gold rush in California had reached China and that sent a rush of chinese laborers into the US. When the mounds of gold in California was found out to be a failure, thousands of Chinese laborers were forced to work on the railroads as their only source of income. -

US Congress acts to allow US to annex any isalnds or part of land unclaimed by other governments. This allowed the spread of the US to begin and begin claiming other chunks of land that was not previously claimed. -

The Hawaiian Queen was overthrown by US Ambassador John. L. Stevens and a group of planters. -
The Battleship Maine is Destroyed
The Battleship Maine is blown apart killing 260 men. The cause of the explosion is not known to this day but at the time, American newspapers blamed it on Spain, and being a large contribution to the start of imperialism in Central America and the Spanish-American War. -
Rough Riders are created
The group of volunteer calvary including theodore roosevelt was created. Later the Rough Riders would be an essential part of taking the strategically located San Juan hill. -

over 600 American Marines landed in Guantanamo Bay beginning the U.S invasion in Cuba. The invasion of Cuba was extremely important to the cultural spread of the U.S and was an extremely strategic move in the Spanish-American war. -

The Rough Riders led by Theodore Roosevelt and the ninth and tenth regiment of African American soldgiers charged San Juan hill and claimed it, leading to 2 more victories due to the strategic placement of it. -

The Treaty of Paris ended the "splendid little war" and left the U.S with Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Phillipines. -
The Panama Canal under US Control
Negotiations began for the Panama Canal, treaties were made and eventually came to a 99 year lease for $10mil as an annual rent fee. This gave the US power to spread our culture even farther and with more ease. The Panama Canal made travel extremely more economic around the Americas.
