2,673 international students were recorded studying abroad in the United States from 74 different countries. (12) Today, the number of international students at the University of Oregon is over this number. -
5000 students study in the US
1912: A short 12 years later the numbers of students studying in the United States had doubled with nearly 5,000 international students studying in the US. At this time it was reported that the most abundant group of students were Canadian, about a fifth of that total number. -

Decreased 18 percent
2004: Within the time between the fall of 2003 and 2004, the amount of foreign students in US schools had decreased 18 percent. These gaps were most largely seen in a decrease “34 percent from China, 19 percent from India, and 34 percent from South Korea,” countries with the largest general population of students in the US. -

2011: The University of Oregon enrolled 2,524 international students, the 52nd highest nation, according to the 2011 Open Doors Report -
820,000 students from foreign countries
2012: The Institute of International Education recorded the highest number of international student within the US university system for the 2012-13 school year. A groundbreaking 820,000 students from foreign countries have enrolled in universities across the country. -
Student represented over 90 countries
2013: The University of Oregon reported it’s highest ever enrollment from students outside. of the US; out of this number, 79% were from East Asia. In total the student body represented over 90 countries. -
the largest group of international student
1979: A large boom of students entered the US education system in the 70s due to the creation of OPEC–the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries–making them the largest group of international students. In 1979, and as a direct result of OPEC’s effect in enrollment 50,000 Iranian students studied in the US making them the majority of foreign students -
1997-98
1997-98: Around 500,000 international students were attending school in the US. It is estimated that these students were responsible for contributing over 8 billion dollars to the US economy that calendar year.
