Plessy v. Ferguson
The supreme court ruled that the racial segregation was constitutional because it was "Separate but Equal". This decision was the predecessor to many years of racism in the education system. -
Brown V. Board of Education
The Supreme Court ruled that separate public schools between whites and blacks was unconstitutional. This was a major break through in the Civil Rights Movement. It made everything equal no matter your race or color. -
Little Rock Nine
This was the first time that African Americans are allowed into a white only school. Nine black teens are admitted to Central High in Little Rock, Arkansas. It was the beginning to equality. -
Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA)
This was a very modern law to include all individuals with disabilities a free and public education. It was one of the first laws that dealt with disabilities and paved the way for more laws about education. -
No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB)
Another law dealing with students that are having a hard time and being 'left behind'. It made it a requirement that states must test to assess students progress. Funding is then dispersed after the tests are given. It was important because it made the schools accountable for the students success.
