    Thomas Newcomen is the one that came up with the idea of the first steam engine but, he isn't the one who legally owns the steam engine. The person that legally owns the steam engine is James Watt. James Watt improved on Newcomen's steam engine because he realized he could increase the efficiency of the steam engine. When the new Steam engine was finished being improved, they now not only use for the mining industry they use it for cotton- spinning factories. flour mills and breweries.
