Independence Movements: Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela

  • France Invades Spain

    France captured and forced the Spanish King, Ferdinand VII to abdicate the throne. Napoleon then put his brother Joseph Bonaparte in charge, which caused a wave of hatred towards France and loyalty to Ferdinand VII.
  • Memorial de Agravios (“Remembrance of Offenses”)

    In 1809, a politician, Camilo Torres Tenorio published Memorial de Agravios, or Remembrance of Offenses, which outlined a list of incidents and maltreatment of Creoles by the Spanish government. A lot of these sentiments were agreed on.
  • Independence Day of Ecuador

    Celebrated on August 10th, it marks when Quito declared independence from Spanish rule.
  • Uprisings in Bogotá

    The revolt established a junta and expelled Spanish Viceroyalty from the area. They still swore loyalty to Ferdinand VII
  • National Congress met in Caracas and created a Constitution

    They officially declared Venezuela to be independent of Spain.
  • Independence Day of Venezuela

    Celebrated on July 5th, it marks the day of the Venezuelan Declaration of Independence in 1811

    Simón Bolívar serves as President

  • Battle of Boyacá

    An army of roughly 3,000 men led by Simón Bolívar and Francisco de Paula Santander defeated Spanish forces. The victory was the end of Spanish rule and Gran Colombia became independent.
  • The Republic of Colombia Declared

    The Republic of Colombia, known as Gran Colombia was proclaimed. It was formerly the Viceroyalty of New Granada. It included roughly modern-day Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, and Panama. Simón Bolívar was president.
  • Battle of Carabobo

    Led by Simón Bolivar, rebels defeated Spanish forces and basically freed Venezuela from Spanish rule.
  • Battle of Pinchincha

    Led by Antonio José de Sucre defeated Spanish forces on a volcano and allowed them to later take Quito, Ecuador.
  • Venezuela rebels

    Venezuela rebels to try and secede from Gran Colombia and form its own country.
  • Gran Colombia Dissolves

    Gran Colombia dissolved after rebellions and Venezuela, Ecuador, and New Granada (Now Colombia) become independent countries. Bolívar resigns and dies soon after.
  • Simón Bolívar Dies

    Died near Santa Marta at the age of 47.
