  • Raised Point Alphabet

    Raised Point Alphabet
    The raised point alphabet was invented by Louis Braille. It took a while until the United States decided to to use his method which was taught at a school school for the blind in St. Louis around the 1860's. Braille helped those who were blind to gain the same access to education as everyone else.
  • Gallaudet University

    Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet founded the first school for the advanced education of the deaf and hard of hearing.There were no schools for students who were special during the 1800's until now. Not Many put the effort in helping students with disabilities but instead they were either at home or sent to an institution.His contributions were also important in the growth of American Sign Language, which is currently commonly used throughout the world. Schools were later created after the success.
  • Council for Exceptional Children

    The Council for Exceptional Children is the the largest  organization focused on improving the educational success of children with disabilities. People all over the country are given the opportunity to help in any way possible no matter how small or big they contribute to students education.   • Brown v. Board of Education (Topeka)

    Brown v. Board of Education (Topeka)
    Brown v. Board was an important case. The Supreme Court ruled that the segregation of students in public schools was unreasonable. It represented that segregation in American schools would come to an end and overrule "the "separate but equal" principle that was places in the 1896 Plessy v. Ferguson case. After the fact there were arguments about how the ruling would be applied.
  • Learning Disabilities Association of America

    In 1963 a group of parents attended a conference in Chicago. Parents and several professionals express their concerns in regards to the services that should be provided to children with special needs. After a few months debating on what should be done the Learning Disabilities Association of America formerly known as Association for Children with Learning Disabilities, was founded by a group of volunteers who agreed to serve as its founding members
  • Special olympics

    The Special Olympics was founded by Eunice Shiver. In 1958 Eunice and Sargent Shriver toured the United states on a mission to find people with intellectual disabilities.   • Mills v. Board of Education of District of Columbia

    Mills v. Board of Education of District of Columbia, According to Mills, no child deserves to be refused admission to a public school simply because of  any disability such as mental, behavioral, physical, defect, or handicap.The higher expenses of the changes to the school cannot be used as reason for refusing students with disabilities. They have the a right to an education.
  • Americans with Disabilities Act

    The Americans with Disabilities Act is a civil rights law allowing workers benefits and privileges of employment that are offered to staff members without disabilities equally to those with disabilities. it is employers responsibility to make appropriate modifications for their employees. This law assures that there will be equal opportunity in jobs, public transit, state and local government services, and telecommunications services.

    IDEA ensures that all students with or without a disability are free public education that suits them. School districts are supposed to provide additional support, for students who have special needs so they can learn alongside their peers who are not disabled in regular classroom.
  • No Child Left Behind Act

    The Elementary and Secondary Education Act formerly known the No Child Left Behind Act primary objective was to minimize the gap in educational achievement between poor, minority students and their peers with more advantage. This was a partnership between businesses, Bush administration, Democrats, and Republicans. It allowed more opportunities when it comes to school choices and strengthening the academic performance of every student, especially those with disabilities.
  • West Virginia Youth Disability Caucus

    West Virginia Youth Disability Caucus started off with just 20 students that made a difference by turning a week in thier state into an act. West Virginia is the first state to require students in schools learn about the history of the disability rights movement from grades k-12. The third week of October is known as Disability History Week so students can learn and be more aware.
