Birth
I was born on July 28, 1895. I grew up with my Mom, Dad, 2 older brothers, 1 older sister, 1 younger brother, and 2 younger sisters. I grew up in China in poverty and in my childhood the longest I have ever lived with a roof over my head was for only 3 weeks. I am now married and me and my wife have a 4 year old son. Me and my family are struggling to stay in our home. I want to go to America to find a better job and to send money home to my family. I hope going to America will be a good -
Arrival in Angel Island - Detained
When I first came to America I was detained for a couple of days because I had immigration issues. I did not like being detained because there was very little privacy. It was also very crowded with so many strangers. I was a bit scared of the strangers because they all looked different, dressed differently, and talked different. I think some of the strangers were scared of me too because they all kept giving me looks of fear and disgust. I want to return there to get off of the streets. -
Finding A Job
Today I went out and found a job. My new boss told me I would earn less than the "Average American", but I was fine with that because it is more than what I made back in my home country. After talking to my new boss, I left the factory and some Americans started yelling at me saying things about me "taking their jobs" and that I should "go back to where I came from". I tried to just walk away and ignore them but they started to beat me up and then left me on the ground in pain. -
All Hard Work Is Gone
I have been working in the factory for 4 months now and I have earned lots of money but I have not sent any back home. But I do not have any of my money left. Since I have been living on the streets I slept in an alley. When I woke up all of the money that was in my pocket was stolen. That was all of my hard work for 4 months, that money was going to be used to help my family, and it is all gone just like that.
