    Russo-Japanese war

    A war was fought between the Empire of Japan and the Russian Empire over territorial claims made by both countries on Manchuria and the Korean Empire. It's important because it was the first all-out war where a non-European power completely vanquished a European nation.
  • Bloody Sunday

    Imperial forces opened fire on the marchers, killing and wounding hundreds. It's important because it was a protest led by Russian industrial workers who had experienced low wages, bad conditions, and horrific treatment from employers.

    Russian Revolution

    The revolution was to shake up the foundations of the tsarist system and reform it. This increased turmoil within the empire and it broke up the peasant communes.

    Second Balkan War

    From the territory obtained from the Ottomans, the Balkan league turns on one another. This is important because it showed how the freed Balkans countries fought for power.

    World War I

    It was a fight between German Empire and Austria-Hungary against the Russian Empire, France, the British Empire, and later the United States. The reasons for the war included political, territorial, and economic competition. As well as, militarism, imperialism and the growth of nationalism. This war is important because it led to the destabilization of the European society and it also altered the social and the political landscapes of the world.

    Russian Civil War

    Fight between the Bolsheviks and the White Army to gain control of Russia. It led to the formation of a single-party system.

    Influenza pandemic

    The 1918 influenza pandemic was the deadliest in modern history. An H1N1 virus with avian genes was responsible for the outbreak. It hindered Europe's social and economic recovery after the war.
  • Treaty of Versailles

    The Treaty of Versailles obliged Germany and the other Central Powers to bear all responsibility for World War I. This meant the loss of territory, reduced military forces, and reparations were paid to Allied nations.

    The Great Depression

    The stock market crash of 1929, the collapse of global trade, government policies, financial collapse, and the loss of the supply of money were the key causes. It was the downturn of the industrialized western world and it had profound shifts in the economy of the west.

    The Great Purge

    It was a ruthless political operation launched by Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin to exterminate rebellious members of the Communist Party and anybody else he considered a danger. It killed millions and it was an act of power to show anyone who stood in Stalin's way would be vanquished.
