Publishing of Webster's Dictionary
Noah Webster wanted to have a dictionary with more of an American style. Noah did this by writing the American Dictionary of the English Language. This event was significant to American Culture because it showed that America didn't depend on England with their language. -
Election of 1828
The Election of 1828 was between John Quincy Adams, and Andrew Jackson.The people felt that their voices were finally being heard because Andrew Jackson was supportive of the "common man". President Andrew Jackson represented the common man. This was significant to American Culture because more people were able to vote due to reduced restrictions on who could vote. -
Battle of the Alamo
The Battle of the Alamo was between Texas and Mexico. Texas wanted to become its own republic. This event was significant to American Culture because it showed Texas how hard it was to fight for freedom. -
Lowell Massachusetts Girls Labor Strike
Many people working at factories were being treated poorly. In 1836 many workers formed a labor union, and about 1,500 woman went on strike. Though the labor movement fell apart workers achieved a few goals. This event was significan to American Culture because it stopped changed the aweful conditions in which factory workers worked in, and showed the government that we the people can take a stand. -
Beginning of the Trail of Tears
The Trail of Tears began after the United States discovered gold in Georgia on Cherokee land. The United States forced the remaining Indians off their land making them move west. This event was significant to American Culture because it foreshadowed how we would treat Native Americans later. -
Death of Joseph Smith
Joseph Smith was a Mormon leader who was killed by a mob in Illinois. This event was significant
to American Culture because he was a great religious figure who started the Mormon Religion. -
Irish Potato Famine
In 1845 a disease caused a huge famine by knocking out Irelands main crop, the potato. The Irish Potato Famine killed 1 million people which forced many to emigrate. This event was significant to American Culture because there was a huge immigration to America. -
Frederick Douglas publishes Auto biography
The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass was about the life of Frederick as a slave. It told the story of his life and all the terrible things whites did. After publication he fleed to Ireland and England because he was scared that his owner would come after him. This event was significant to American Culture because it was the start of blacks voices being heard. -
End of the Mexican War
This war was between the Mexicans and America. This war ended with the signning of the the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The disagreement started land. and whether or not it was American land or Mexican land. This event was significant to American Culture becuase America gained much of majority day California, Arizonia, Utah and Nevada. -
Beginning of the California Gold Rush
Once America got the land know as modern day California and James Marshall discovered gold many Americans wanted to move west.This event was significant to American culture because it caused a major immigrantion westward therefore expanding the nation. -
Seneca Falls Convention
This convention was held for women's rights. Some women who gathered presented a their own document the Declaration of Sentiments and Resolutions. It listed several complaints which ended with a demand for rights. Every resolution was approved unanimously except sufferage. After much debate it was approved by a slim margin. This event was significant to American Culture because it paved the way for womens rights in the future. -
Thoreau writes work Walden
Henry David Thoreau wrote Walden. By living by himself in nature he hoped to gain an understanding as to what life would be like with less distractions. Thoueau was apart of a philosophy call transcendentalism. Because of this belief he urged people not obey laws they did not agree with, through a form of protest called civil disobedience.This was significant to American Culture because many listened to Thoreau and stopped paying taxes, which land Thoreau in jail.
