  • Perkins School for the Blind

    Perkins School for the Blind
    In March of 1829, the New England Asylum for the Blind was created in Boston. This place only started off with 6 students, but it grew quickly in the few years after it started. Dr. John Dix Fisher was the man who started to get the idea of the school flowing because he thought, "that the State owed to the blind an education. . . . " This school became very popular and well known to all. In 1888 Helen Keller ended up attending and eventually become there most famous graduate. (Perkins School)
  • Syracuse State School

    Syracuse State School
    Originally called The New York State Asylum for Idiots, was created to house children from the ages 7 to 14 that were considered deficient in intelligence. "the Syracuse State School rightly noted that it was "the pioneer institution in the United States for the care and training of mentally deficient children."" This school used many terms for the students that had troubles which can now be very degrading and quite rude to call a person. (R Stewart)(Syracuse State School)
  • "Learning Disabilities" were recognized for needing help

    "Learning Disabilities" were recognized for needing help
    Now days Learning Disabilities Association of America was first come into the minds of people when a group of parents brought up there concerns about students that have different perceptual disabilities that effect there learning. The group brought it up at a conference in Chicago in 1963 and got the wheels turning. This helped create the Association for Children with Learning Disabilities that was established January of 1964.   • Education for All Handicapped Children Act

    Education for All Handicapped Children Act
    In 1975 EHA (Public Law 94-142) was enacted to help constitute the rights of individuals with disabilities to have an education. In 1970, the United States only had 1 in 5 children with disabilities enrolled in school and some states even had laws that excluded students that had any sort of disability. During the following years of 1976-77 there was 3,694,000 students that were able to be enrolled into school with help from the EHA. These students helped ranged from ages 3 to 21. (History IDEA)
  • Individuals with Disabilities Education Act

    Individuals with Disabilities Education Act
    Since 1975 they had changed Education for All Handicapped Children Act (Public Law 94-142) to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (Public Law 101-476). With this change the Act was renamed and adjusted. With some of the changes they had made being the terminology from handicap to disability. Since this change of terms means that other things disabilities were able to be involved such as autism and traumatic brain injury.
