History of Special Education Timeline

  • American school for the Deaf

    The American School for the Deaf was the first school for disabled children anywhere in the Western Hemisphere. It was Founded in Hartford, Connecticut by Laurent Clerc and Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet.
  • Law Mandating Compulsory Education

    This is a law that was passed by Rhode Island to mandate compulsory education for all children.
    Compulsory education is education in which children are required by law to receive and for governments to provide.
  • Beattie v. Board of Education

    Special needs students were expelled from school due to facial abnormalities and drooling. The ruling in the case was that all children with disabilities must be provided a publicly supported education. This case was responsible for gaining the right to due process safeguards for these students.
  • Council for Exceptional Children

    The council for Exceptional Children is the first advocacy group for children with disabilities. It is one of the largest special education advocacy group. The main objective if this group is to ensure that children with special needs receive FAPE (the right to free appropriate public education)
  • Classification of Autism

    The classification of Autism was introduced by Dr. Leo Lanner of John Hopkins University.
    There are 5 major types of autism - Asperger's syndrome, Rett syndrome, childhood disintegrative disorder, Kanner's syndrome, and pervasive developmental disorder.
  • Elementary and Secondary Education Act

    ESEA did not make the law to educate students with disabilities. It give grants to state school. It put programs into place to educate students with disabilities.
  • Section 504

    This law protect discrimination of special needs and disabilities. It is the first law that gives protection to students with special needs. This law includes FAPE and LRE. Students are eligible when they have either a physical or mental disability that inhibits their learning experience.
  • Americans with Disabilities Act

    This act was signed into law by President George W. Bush. It promises people with special needs will have the same rights as everybody else both at school and work. This act also stated that people with special needs cannot be discriminated against in schools, the workplace, and everyday society such as public transportation.
  • IDEA

    Meaning Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. Signed into law by George W. Bush. Includes 6 pillars: FAPE, LRE, IEP, evaluation, parent/student participation, and all procedural safeguards for participants. With 4 sections: general provision, special education services, early intervention services, and national activities to improve education of children with disabilities.
  • IDEA Reauthorized

    The re-authorization of IDEA made many changes to the original. The changes include the IEP, due process, and student discipline.
