Formal Deaf Education Began in the United States. Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet and Laurent Clerc established the first permanent school for the deaf 200 years later we are still celebrating their heroic efforts. -

Telephone Invented for Deaf
Alexander Bell invents the telephone for the deaf: Alexander Bell not only invented a telephone to help make speech more visible but he opens up a school for speech for deaf teachers in Boston. -
Beattie vs. Board of Education
Beattie vs. Board of Education. This case involved a student who had a disability that cause him to drool, and have involuntary facial movements. He was expelled because it “nauseated the teachers and students”. This was taken to the Supreme Court and then agreed that students be excluded. This changed with a significant movement called Mills Vs. Board of Education and PARC. -
Council for Exceptional Children
Founded in 1922, the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) is the largest internationally recognized professional organization devoted to improving the educational experience of students with gifts and talents or disabilities. -
National Association for Gifted
National Association for Gifted is founded by Ann Isaacs. This mission was to enhance the growth and development of gifted students with education and research. Without this founding gifted students would not have the resources they have today. -
Mills vs. Board of Education
Mills v. Board of Education - This court ruled that students with disabilities must be given the right of public education even if students are unable to pay for cost of education. Along with proper training and public transportation. -
Section 504
Section 504 of the Rehabilitation ACT of 1973 extended civil rights to people with disabilities. It states that “no person can be discriminated against, excluded, or denied benefits of any educational institution, program or federal funds” Link text -
IDEA
This law was enacted in order to make possible all rights of children receive public education were protected. In 1986 it was revised to include infants and preschoolers. The IDEA law act includes six major principles that support these established ideas. -
History of Disability Rights Enters Curricula
This bill required that students K-12 public school systems are to be taught the history of disability right movement. This movement was brought about by the efforts of 20 young people with disabilities from the state of West Virginia.This allows students with disabilities to be granted to right of education and teaching curricula that is fitting for each student.
