The First Special Education School Opening
The state of Connecticut opened the first special education school known as: The Connecticut Asylum for the Education and Instruction of Deaf and Dumb Persons. During this time period a dumb person was referred to as individual who was unable to speak. The opening of this school came from parents who wanted their deaf children to still receive an education. -
International Dyslexia Association
International Dyslexia Association is a non profit organization dedicated to the study and treatment of dyslexia. The purpose of this organization is to help those who struggle with dyslexia so they may have improved lifestyles and be more successful in their educational careers. It also provides resources to teachers and parents to help aid those struggling with dyslexia. -
Autism Society of America
Autism Society of America is a special needs organization that was founded in 1965 by Bernard Rimland and Ivar Lovaas. The Autism Society of Americas goal is to increase public awareness about autism and the daily issues faced by parents, families and professionals who they interact with. -
Free Appropriate Public Education
Students who are eligible for special education and related services are entitled to receive a free appropriate public education also known as FAPE. Educational services are provided at no cost, it allows student to make progress in general curriculum and is planned to meet individual students needs. Individual states can decide on the types of educational programs to use. -
Education for all Handicapped Children Act
This law states that public schools must provide children with special needs the same opportunities for education as other students. The purpose of this act is to make special education accessible, institute evaluation requirements, and maintain appropriate services for disabled students. Public schools are required to create an educational plan with parent input that would give as close to an educational experience of non-disabled students. -
Honig V. Doe
The U.S. Supreme Court in Honig V. Doe ruled that a California school board violated the Education for All Handicapped Children Act when it expelled a student for their behavior that was related to his disability. The case confirmed that schools can not expel students for behaviors related to their disability.

Americans with Disabilities Act
This act was signed into law by the President in 1990. The ADA is the first comprehensive declaration of equality for people with disabilities. The ADA protects the civil rights of people with disabilities in employment, transportation, and guaranteeing access to public places such as schools, restaurants, stores, hotels, etc. -
Individuals with Disabilities Education Act
This act significantly improved opportunities for individuals with disabilities. It provides bilingual education, transition services, autism categories, expands special education services, etc. It also provides access to general education curriculum and includes a general education teacher with a behavior plan. IDEA says that children who receive special education should learn in the least restrictive environment with other students who do not receive special education. -
Assistive Technologies Act
The Assistive Technology Act was created in 1998 and was re approved in 2004. The act provides assistive technology to those with special needs or disabilities so they can more fully participate in education, employment and daily activities at the same level as other people in their communities. The 56 Assistive Technology Act Programs created under the law provide a place where people can go for product demonstrations, low-cost loans for their purchases and information on these products. -
No Child Left Behind Act
This act was passed to assist in improving the overall performance of Elementary and Middle schools in the United States. It also ensured that no child (including special needs children), would be trapped in a school that is failing. It allows students of failing districts to have the choice of attending other public or charter schools. Teachers also need to be certified in the subject they teach and highly qualified.
