History of Computers

  • The Pascaline

In 1642 Blaise Pascal invented the Pascaline (mechanical device), which only would have performed addition if it worked.
  • Ada Byron was born

Ada was born in 1815 in London, United Kingdom.
  • Difference Engine

Another mechanical device created by Charles Babbage in 1822 was made for navigating ships. It was never built but it lead to creation of Analytical engine(lost at sea).
  • Analytical Engine

This computer followed programs on punched cards and designed to make decisions based on programs.- Never built but used as a model today.
  • Ada Byron

She was the first African American female programmer and she stated no computer no matter how powerful could think. That is still true today.
  • Tabulating Machine

Herman Hollerith invented this for the Census of 1890, (which used electricity instead of gears to perform.)
  • Tabulating Machine Co.

Herman Hollerith started the Tabulating Machine Co. In 1896.
  • Tragedy at Tabulating machine Co.

Hermans company was taken over by IBM's in 1924.
  • ENIAC

An electric computer the size of a home could complete difficult math problems in seconds. This machine was originally created to determine the trajectory of shells in WWII, but was completed after the war. John Mauchly and j. Presper Eckert began construction of this in June 1943.
  • Mark 1

In 1944 a team from IBM and Harvard University completed the Mark 1 under leadership of Howard Aiken.
  • Transistor

William Shockley, John Bardeen, and Walter Brittain of Bell Labs invented the transistor in 1947
  • Fortran

In 1957, John Backus and a team of researches completed the fortran, a high level programming language intuitive commands such as read and write.
  • Cobol

Developed in 59' by Grace Hopper and the DOD. It provided a common language for use on all computers.
  • Debug

Grace Murray invented the term "Debug" when he removed a moth that flew into the Curcuitry of the Mark II.
  • Model 650

In the early 60's, IBM introduced the first medium sized computer, the model 650.
  • Integrated Curcuit

Bob Noyce developed the ic while working at Fairchild Semiconductor.
  • IBM System 360

This was one of the first computers to run on ICs and was so popular that IBM had trouble keeping up with demand.
  • Microproccessor

Marcian Hoff, an engineer at Intel, invented the Microproccessor, an entire CPU on a single chip.
  • First desktop

The Microproccessor made it possible to build a microcomputer, the first one being the Altair created in 1975.
  • Apple

Stephen Wozniak and Steve Jobs built the first Apple computer of 1976.
  • The Stepped Reckener

In the 17th century this mechanical machine was conceived by Leibniz. This device was supposed to add, subtract, multiply, square roots, and divide, although it was too far ahead of its time with malfunctioned parts so it never worked.
