History of Cell Theory Project

  • Maggots and other Organisms

    Maggots and other Organisms
In 1658, Scientist Athanasius Kircher discovered maggots and other living creatures developed in decaying tissues. In the same time period, oval red-blood corpuscles were discovered by Dutch naturalists Jan Swammerdam, who also discovered a frog embryo consists of globular particles.
I chose this date because it was the discovery of maggots in decaying tissue. I think this is important because maggots and other organisms are essential to the breakdown of living organisms today.
  • Macrographia

    Macrographia
In 1665, Robert Hooke published Macrographia. It was the first important work devoted to microscopical observation, and what it could mean for naturalists.
I picked this event because it talks about the use of the microscope and what Macrographia could mean for naturalists.
  • Nucleus Discovery

    Nucleus Discovery
In 1831, Scottish Botanist Robert Brown discovered the nucleus. He discovered that it is an essential constituent of living cells. He also introduced the term nucleus.
I chose this event because it talks about the discovery of the main part of a cell. I also chose this because it talk about who introduced the name nucleus.
  • Living Organism Living Component

    Living Organism Living Component
In 1838, cells were discovered to be the basic component of living organisms. At that time the Cell Theory was formulated.
I chose this event because it talks about the start of the Cell Theory.
  • Oil-Immersion Lens

    Oil-Immersion Lens
In 1870, The invention of the Oil-Immersion lens happens, the development of the microtome technique, and the use of fixing new methods and dyes.
I chose this event because without the Oil-Immersion lens helped lead the way to lenses we use today.
  • Black Reaction

    Black Reaction
Black Reaction was created by Golgi. It was a very important breakthrough in neurotechnology and neuroanatomy.
I chose this event because I had no clue what black reaction was or who created it.
  • Mitosis

    Mitosis
In 1882, Walther Flemming deduced the term mitosis and gave a description of its processes.
I chose this event because it tells us about the term mitosis and who came up with it.
  • Nerve-Cell Body Idea

    Nerve-Cell Body Idea
In 1886, the nerve-cell idea was introduced by Wilhelm His. His thought was that it and its prolongations formed an independent unit.
I chose this event because I had never heard of the nerve-body idea and wanted to learn about it.
  • Ergastoplasm

    Ergastoplasm
In 1897, the term ergastoplasm was introduced.
I chose this event because it is a work that we have used in class that I wanted to know more about.
  • Mitochondria

    Mitochondria
In 1898, the term mitochondria was introduced and observed by many authors. In that same year, Camillo Golgi discovered the intracellular apparatus that bears his name.
