History of 1960-1980 in Brazil

  • Janio Quadros

    Janio Quadros
Janio Quadros was elected president of Brasil. The author of the book "The Alchemist", Paulo Coelho, was very tied in with the political going-ons in his country. Infact, he was thrown in jail 3 times because of his political activ ism. He cared a lot about the how his country was doing, even when it wasn't doing so hot, and that really is stressed in the way he writes.
  • Janio Quadros

    Janio Quadros
Quadros left office, leaving the country in a state of distress. This is the beginning off bad times in Brasil. About this time, Paulo Coelho was still a boy. But he was becoming a bit more restless. He was forced to experience psyciatric help a couple years after this. And being a young boy at this point in his life, He probably didn't care too much about the politics of Brasil as much as older citizens. But the year before this event, he received his first literay prize in a poetry contest.
  • Joao Goulart

    Joao Goulart
Goulart takes office in Brasil. This is similar to the last one in that Paulo Coelho was not fully grown up yet. He probably had little to no knowledge about what was going on in his country, and he probably didn't really care. He had other problems to face, like his parents thinking that he need mental help and gardes and girls and basically every worry a teenage boy could and should have.
  • Military Rule Begins

    Military Rule Begins
Goulart exiled from Brasil. Military rule begins. Plan formed by Magalhaes Pinto (govenor of Minas Gerais), Adhemar de Barros (govenor of Sao Paulo) and Carlos Lacerda (govenor of Rio de Janeiro). This is the year Paulo Coelho started his journey through mental help, so this particular event didn't affect him as much then as it did later, when he became a political rights activist.
  • Ernesto Geisel

    Ernesto Geisel
Geisel takes office as president of Brasil and makes new laws ti limit political activity and voting rights. Paulo Coelho had started going to law school two years to this event, so he was probably well aware of the government at that point in time, but he soon after dropped out to "embrace the spirit of the seventies". Which is probably around the time when he started fighting the political policies of his corrupt government.
  • The Debts of Brasil

    The Debts of Brasil
Brasil stops paying its foreign debts. A year prior to this, Paulo Coelho had married his first wife, who was an artist. I would imagine that the both of them had strong opinions and had both cared about the political wrong-doings of Brasi.
  • Tancredo Neves

    Tancredo Neves
Neves elected president by an electroal college system set up by the military. First cicilian president in 21 years. At this point Paulo Coelho had not published any books. He was still just a random citizen, devoted to his nation of Brasil, his God, and his wife. He had also not yet experienced his spiritual awakening that sparked the idea of both "The Pilgrimage" and "The Alchemist".
  • Jose Sarney

    Jose Sarney
Tancredo Neves gets sick and dies before his inaguration, Sarney takes his place as president. This is the same as the previous one I wrote, as they are in the same year and only a month apart.
  • Cruzado Plan

    Cruzado Plan
Sarney introduces a plan so as to decrease the debt and inflation of Brasil. It froze prices and wages. But after about a year, the plan collapsed and inflation was higher than ever. It was in 1986 when PAulo Coelho experienced his spirtiual awakening. He saw the painting "Santiago de Compostela", which inspired him to write both "the Pilgrimage" and "The Alchemist", going on his own Personal Legend of becoming and author. Which if you have read the book, is what its all about.
  • New Constitution

(The year The Alchemist was finished and published in Brasil)
Brasil forms a new constitution because of its economical struggles and the overwhelming power the president had. The new constitution decreased the power the president had and called for elections from the public. As I previously stated, this was the year the book "the Alchemist" was published, although it didn't become famous until about a year later in France.
  • Fernando Collor de Mello

    Fernando Collor de Mello
Collor de Mello elected and inaguarated as the first truly elected president since 1960. Introduces all sorts of ways to improve the economy of Brasil, but all the things he promised in his election failed. Inflation continues to rise. Paulo Coelho published his third book this year. It was called Brinda.
  • Itamar Franco

    Itamar Franco
Collor de Mello resignes after being accused of corruption (he was later cleared of this charge). Franco takes his place as president. At this point in his life, PAulo Coelho was a well-known, well-liked, accomplished author.
