President Thomas Jefferson sent Lewis and Clark to the uncharted territory in the West so they could find a water route to the Pacific. Along the way they found new species of plants and animals that were not known to the European people. (p. 344) -
Steamboat (Robert Fulton)
Robert Fulton was widely credited for inventing the first commercially successful steamboat. Also in 1800 Robert was commissioned by Napoleon to design the "Nautilus" which was the first practical submarine.

The Donner Party
In the spring of 1846 90 emigrants left Springfield Illinois. They were heading west but along the way they took routes that were believed to be shortcuts. They became trapped because of the harsh snow and ran out of food and water. They turned to cannibalism to stay alive. Only half of the original group survived. -
The Mexican American War
The Mexican American War was the conflict between the United States and the Centralist Republic of Mexico. The combat lasted a year and a half, and during the operations Americans took over New Mexico and California. -
The California Gold Rush
The California Gold Rush first began in 1849 when James Marshall discovered gold in California. He discovered the gold while building a sawmill. He saw a shiny glimpse in a river and turned out to be gold. The news spread like wildfire and soon everybody was looking for gold in the west. -

On this date, the confederate army opened fire on the union fort called "Fort Sumter". This battle sparked the civil war. The union commander surrendered the fort and was evacuated the next day. -

On this date the 16th president of the United States was assassinated by an actor whose name was john Wilkes booth. On April 14th while Lincoln was watching a play in his box Booth came in and shot him in the head. He later died. -

This bombing was the first atomic bomb dropped on Japan. When the bomb went off it created a giant mushroom looking cloud that over looked the city. The atomic bomb killed 90,000-166,000 people. -

On this date was when African American people wanted to start attending all white schools. People remember the story of the little African American girl who started attending the school. But this case revolved more around letting all African Americans into white schools. -

"The king of rock" died in his Graceland mansion. He was on his toilet but fell off into his own vomit. His staff called for an ambulance but when he got there he was already dead from cardiac arrhythmia. -

This was the day I was born. I was a very small baby, but I had a very big head. My parents say that when I was born I didn't cry, and the doctors thought something was wrong with me. -
9/11
On this date terrorists from al-Qaeda hijacked 4 passenger airlines. There first two targets were the twin towers in New York. The next two targets were the white house in Washington D.C, and the pentagon in Washington also. The two airlines that targeted the twin towers and the one airline that targeted the pen pentagon all succeed. But the one headed for the white house did not it crashed near the Indian lake and Shanksville Pennsylvania because the passengers aboard that flight fought back.
