Historic Special Education Events

  • PARC and Mills- 1970

    Two cases were brought that both brought change. PARC was designed to deal with the exclusion of mentally challenged students in the classroom. They came to the terms that parents must be included in the placing of students. Mills was targeting the acts of; suspending, expelling, and excluding students who had disabilities. Mills occurred in the district of Columbia.
  • Congressional Investigation- 1972

    In 1972 Congress launched an investigation to look into how students with disabilities were being treated. They found that millions of students with disabilities were at a severe disadvantage. It was revealed later that 8 million we're not receiving the help they needed, and only 4 million were. This caused congress to invest a lot of money as well as the tax payers contribute so that these kids get the help they deserve.
  • The Education for All Handicapped Children Act of 1975 (Public Law 94-142)- 1975

    On November 19th on 1975, congress enacted the listed law above. Congress intended for all Children with any disability would have the right to an education. It also made it so any local agencies would be responsible for these children to get said services. This law also brought safeguards meant to protect the rights of the children and their parents.
  • Did Your State Pass the IDEA Compliance Test- 1999

    In 1999 a series of questions were sent out to school districts to see if they passed the IDEA Compliance Test. An example of one of these questions was, " "Your state education department should have a comprehensive system of personnel development that is designed to ensure that there is an adequate supply of properly trained teachers." The report revealed that around 88% of schools failed to meet these standards. This was very disappointing to see.
  • IDEA Compliance Report: Back to School on Civil Rights - "States Ignore Special Ed Law"- 2000

    This was very upsetting to read. In January 25 of 2000 the federal data in regards to the treatment of handicapped students. It was revealed that many students with disabilities were not getting the education they needed. Many schools were not following the standards and in some cases students were being discriminated against.
  • No Child Left Behind Act- 2001

    When put in place the original goal for this act was to ensure all students had equal and fair chances to succeed. Special education teachers were trained to have exceptional mastery of the subjects they were teaching. They were also attempting to bring IDEA in with this act aswell.
  • Syracuse Wins National Championship in Basketball- 2003

    In 2003 Syracuse Mens basketball beat Kansas for the basketball national championship. Syracuse was coached by Hall of Famer Jim Boheim. Star Player Carmelo Anthony's effort also helped as they won 81-78.
  • Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act of 2004

    This was a amend of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act of 1975. Hear they increased their focus on accountability. They specifically aimed in on; reading, early intervention, research- based instruction, and keying in on teachers being highly trained when dealing with students who are handicapped. There were also goals such as setting up students with disabilities for the future.
  • Hurricane Katrina- 2005

    In 2005 Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans. This was a devastating event that cost many people their lives. It also caused a lot of damage to the city. This took multiple years to repair and bounce back from.
  • New York Giants Win Super Bowl 42- 2008

    In the 2007-2008 season the New York Giants upset the then 16-0 Patriots in the Superbowl. It came off an incredible 4th quarter comeback where Eli Manning made a crazy throw to Wide Receiver David Tyree to help set up a game winning touchdown.
  • Yankees Win World Series- 2009

    In 2009 the Yankees knocked off the Phillies to win their 27th world Series. They won best out of 7 series 4-2. The MVP of the world series was pitcher Hideki Matsui.
  • No Child Left Behind Out, Every Student Succeeds Act- 2015

    In 2015 Congress reauthorized a previous act, formerly known as the "No Child Left Behind Act. The Law had removed many previous standards about accountability and the qualification for teachers. Unfortunately after looking back at this in 2020, it was revealed that still over half the schools were not in compliance with said laws and standards.
  • Covid 19 Becomes a Major Part of Life-2020

    In 2020 corona virus became a major part of life. It originated in 2019 but 2020 was when the results really came. People could not go to school or work for a long time. It had a major impact on everyday life but especially the education system.
