    Discovery and Conquest

    It began with the entry of the Spaniards in 1537, by the north of our region from Chachapoyas to Moyobamba. It was Hernando de Alvarado, brother of the conqueror Alonso de Alvarado, with the support of cacique Huamán, who managed to dominate the natives of the area.
    The expedition of San Martin de la Riva and Herrera to conquer the jíbaros, gave rise to the foundation of Lamas, on October 10, 1656. Tarapoto was the headquarters for the realization of this conquest.

    The expedition of Pedro de Urzúa

    The expedition of Pedro de Urzúa had a tragic corollary with his death and that of his lieutenant Juan de Vargas, on January 1, 1561, the place has not been located exactly.
    Motilones and Cumbazas of this area gave rise to the founding of Lamas on October 10, 1656; Tarapoto was the headquarters for the realization of this conquest. From that brutal and heroic stage the oral tradition that refers to the remote origin of our city has been preserved

    Colonization

    In the year 1769, the king of Spain ordered the viceroy Amat and Junet, to expel the Jesuits from Peru and as a consequence of the Peruvian Amazon, this was done. This caused certain havoc in the grouped native organizations, as the reductions of the same that upset the life and the customs, producing confusion and destruction of the native identity.

    Spanish Foundation

    The bishop of Trujillo, Don Baltasar Jaime Martínez de Compagnón y Bufanda, left the city of Trujillo on July 20, 1782. Upon reaching the Tarapoto Valley, he gathered together all the scattered native groups, and with them he founded the Spanish city of the Holy Cross of the Motilones of Tarapoto, on August 20, 1782, under the jurisdiction of the Curate of Lamas and the Diocese of Trujillo In honor of her, the church or parish of the city of Tarapoto was built.
