ENIAC- (Electronic Numerical Intergrator and Computer)
Developed by Army ordinace to compute WWII ballistic firing table. They weighed 30 tons and had 200 kilowatts of electric power. Also had 18,000 vacuum tubes, 1,500 relays, and hundreds and thousands of resistors, capacitors, and inductors. -
Period: to
First Generation Computer
Use of enormous tubes for circuitry and magnetic drums for memory. They were big, clumsy, and very expensive to operate. Larger AC were needed and there was a high electricity consumption, but a lot of electricitiy failure occured. 1st generation computers used machine language with magnetic core memory. They also had storage-punched cards-tape -
The Manchester Mark I computer
Functioned as a complete system using the Williams tube for memory. Became a prototype for Ferranti Corp.'s first computer -
IBM shipped its first computer
The 701 computer was shipped for the first time. During the 3 years of production IBM sold 19 machines to multiple places -
MIT built the TX-0
The first genreal purpose, programmable computer built that used transistors and was constructed at MIT's Lincoln Labratory. -
Period: to
Second Generation Computer
In this generation transistors replaced vacuum tubes. Also in the 2nd generation core memory was develope. This generation also was a lot faster than the first. The 2nd generation also had the first operating system. The programming was done with machine language and assembly language. Another addition to the second generation was the use of magnetic tapes and discs. The best part of the second generation computers was that they were smaller in size, used less heat and less electricity. -
The Integrated Circuit was invented
Invented by Jack Kilby. It combined electronic components onto a small silicon disk. -
COBOL language was developed by a team made up of manufacturers
COBOL meaning Common Business Oriented Language. Was designed for business use Designers hoped it would run on any computer for any person/group with minimal changes. -
IBM 1301 Disk Storage Unit is released
It was announced and was put in use for IBM's 7000- series of mainframe computer. The maximum space on it was 28 million characters and the disk rotated at 1,000 R.P.M's. It was leased for $2,100 per month or you could purchase it for $115,500. -
Period: to
Third Generation Computer
Integrated circuits were developed. The electricity use was low. Two types of technology were included in this generation which are the MSI and SSI. MSI meaning Medium-Scale integration. SSI meaning Small-Scale integration. High level languages were used in this generation as well. The element Silicon played a big role in this generation as well as it is used to make computer chips, transistors, etc. This resulted in an increase in speed and effcicency of the computers. -
CDC's 6600 supercomputer
Designed by Seymour Cray that performed up to 3 million instructions per second. Has a processing speed 3 times the speed of the IBM Stretch. -
Data Genreal Corp. started
Was started by a group of engineers who had recently left Digital Equipment Corp, and intorduced the Nova with a 32 kilobytes memory for $8,000. President and founder is Ed deCastro. -
Period: to
Fourth Generation Computer
LSI and VLSI technology was used. Portable computers started to develop. The fourth generation raided technology of data storage, and was used in virtual reality, multimedia, and simulation. They started in use for data communication. Also in this generation there was different types of memories with high speeds and lots of storage space. Also had smaller and faster circuits. Also with laptops developing at this time too. All of todays modern computers fall into this category. -
Microprocessor in 1971
Contains the core processing capabilities of an entire computer on a single chip -
The Micral
Earliest commericial, non-kit personal computer based on a micro-processor named the Intel 8008 and sold for $1,750.00. -
The design of the Xerox Alto
Created by the researchers at the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center. The creation was the first work station with a built-in mouse for input. Offered many menus and etc. -
Steve Wozniak designed the Apple I
It is a single board computer. The price was $500, and him and Steve Jobs started their business. Had a 6502 microprocessor. -
First portable computer
Adam Osborne completed the Osborne I, the first portable computer. It weighed 24 pounds and cost $1,795. It contained a 5" display, a modem, 64 kilobytes of memory, and two 5 1/4" floppy disk drives. -
The Amiga 1000 is released
Commodore's Amiga 1000 sold for $1,295 and that is without a monitor. It had audio and video capabilities beyond those that are found in other computers. -
Microsoft shipped Windows 3.0
This was compatible with DOS programs, the first sucessful version of Windows. Supported large graphical applications for the first time on its Intel 80386 microprocessor. -
Iomega Zip Disk is released
This allowed 100MB to be stored on a cartridge the size of a 3 1/2 inch floppy disk. -
Microsoft releases Windows XP
It is released with a new design and is avaliable in 25 languages. It is both fast and stable and also makes you aware of any viruses or hackers. -
Windows 7 and counting.... (many other programs to come along)
Was released in 2009 but used now and includes many features like using your fingers to browse the web. You can also stream music, videos, and photos from your computer to TV. -
Period: to
Fifth Generation Computers
Will be used in parallel processing, will use superconductors, will be used in speech recognition, will have the use of intelligent robots, and be used in artificial intelligence. Will be able to think, reason, and learn by themselves. Will be able to process data by using light instead of electrons, and will be tiny computers that utilized nano technology. Will be built into desks, home appliances, and many other devices used every day. -
Parallel Processing
WIll be divided into multiple processors and will have fewer tasks to perform and also the program will run in less time. -
Speech recognition and New Apple Television
In the fifth generation you will be able to talk into your DVR/TV. Soon Apple will be creating TV's that have phone syncing capabilities.
